Martinez had power and was respected. That's why Chavez Jr never went in for the kill like he did with Lee. Sure Martinez had weaknesses like someone posted earlier but who doesn't? I also agree with CST, Martinez downfall was that 12th round and consequently Martinez was finished by Chavez. Martinez could never recover after that. I think Chavez looked awful against Martinez because of how Martinez was keeping him honest with his power. Compared to Canelo fight, Jr looked like he didn't want to be there at all. Not taking away anything from Canelo because he did what he was supposed to do, beat up Chavez to a pulp.
What about the math of . . . weighing in at 158 lbs for Martinez vs weighing in at 164 lbs for Canelo? Which is bigger? Also compare the size of Chavez's stomach at the Martinez weigh-in (sunk-in) vs his stomach at the Canelo weigh-in (normal looking). And what about how many media members and fans were impressed with how healthy Chavez looked at the Canelo weigh-in and amazed at how easily he made weight? That math seems to go against the idea that Chavez was more drained vs Canelo than he was vs Martinez. As far as Canelo hitting harder than Chavez Jr, well, for look at the damage that Chavez Jr's sustained vs Canelo vs the damage he sustained vs Martinez. Canelo's punches had much more snap on his punches vs Chavez than Martinez had vs Chavez. Martinez was outboxing Chavez, while Canelo was lighitng Chavez up round after round completely demoralizing him. Mr Triple G himself was asked recently if Canelo was the biggest puncher he's ever faced and he answered of course.
Hes not the biggest puncher at all, Jacobs is a ko specialist and so's Lemieux. Total gulfs between them, ggg hyping it up bro and your swallowing it ! Chavez jnr also is not the same as he was v Martinez, its clear as day
Soooo ... no avatar bet with me for the Floyd / McGregor fight? Dude, if you think Conor has a great chance, just do it!
Call me crazy but Chavez looks far more ****ed up post Martinez than he did post Canelo. Post Martinez Chavez looked like Quasimodo. Not to mention he looked like a guy who just sustained brain damage. This content is protected Post Canelo Chavez was banged up a little. At least he could open his left eye. This content is protected As far as the weigh in goes, sure he looked worse at the Martinez weigh in, but here's the catch, Chavez had been consistently fighting at 160 up until the fight, he still rehydrated up to Cruiserweight, whereas before the Canelo, sure he didn't look as drained, but he still hadn't fought below Super Middleweight in almost 5 years and didn't rehydrate nearly as much, and was wartorn and shot and that does matter. And think about it, Martinez did that much damage only by outboxing him, Canelo was lighting him up and didn't do nearly as much damage. Also GGG is hyping the fight. Lemieux, Jacobs and Stevens all clearly hit harder than Canelo.
You’re right, his left eye was completely closed after Martinez, where it was only partially closed after Canelo. I would say it was somewhat comparable. However I believe that was due to him having a better training camp vs Canelo. When you are healthier, when you are eating right, you generally don’t mark up quite as bad. I also think Canelo held back at times from really hurting Chavez, and I think that was blatantly obvious that at times Canelo could have really hurt Chavez worse but decided to lay on the ropes to give the fans some back and forth. Another factor was Canelo was standing in between rounds for the entire 12 rounds which I’d imagine takes a little something off his power. It was also Canelo’s first fight above 155 lbs so naturally Canelo must have been experimenting with how much energy and power he actually had at a higher weight. These are good points as well, and I agree that Chavez had more energy and had more stability at that weight, but again that’s different than saying he was a corpse vs Canelo. He may have performed poorly vs Canelo, but he didn’t actually look like a corpse. His body looked healthy, it was just he didn’t have the energy over the course of the 12 rounds. I think that had a lot to do with some of those big punches that Canelo landed in round 2 that completely changed the fight. I doubt Chavez thought Canelo could hurt him early like that and I also think Chavez underestimated Canelo’s speed advantage. Where as with Martinez, Chavez was more prepared tactically for what Martinez was going to bring. It seemed to me that Canelo actually hurt Chavez earlier in the fight than Martinez hurt Chavez (though I’d have to watch that again as it’s been a while).
Canelo was calling out Martinez until his people told him to STFU, which Canelo did. Martinez would clown Legs of Stone.
As much as I'm a fan of Sergio, that version of him loses to Canelo of today. Sergio from Williams fight tho? KOs Canelo.
Nice theories, they may hold some water, but you're stretching it, this is all just conjecture. Maybe its because Canelo couldn't KO him, just like Canelo couldn't KO Cotto, or Trout, or Lara, or Hatton, or Mosley. And maybe its because Martinez hits harder than Canelo.
