ring dimensions for professional fights are actually governed by the host state's athletic commission (eg, Nevada Athletic Commission)

(the complete provision for the ring specification also includes requirements for the number of ropes (4), distance from canvas to bottom rope (18''), length of the ring apron (from rope to edge of canvas, 18'')

i don't know the relevant regulation for every state, but for instance, Nevada's mandates a minimum size

The ring must be at least 20-feet square within the ropes
again, this is only for pro fights within Nevada

Nevada's regulation specifies only a minimum size (technically surface area) and a shape (square--ie, all four sides are of equal length), or identically, Nevada's regulation for ring size specifies a minimum ring surface area (400 sq ft)

in other words, maximum ring size (one size of a square) is specified in the fight contract provided that it is not less than the regulatory minimum

the ring size for major fights in Nevada often exceeds the regulatory minimum of 20 feet per side. For instance, the Mayweather-Pacquiano fight at the MGM was 24 feet / side, which again, was agreed upon in the fight contract

i believe that the analogous regulations for other states have similar structure--ie, the ring must be a square and a minimum side length is specified but there is no constraint on maximum ring size

I thought ward wants the fight on the inside. Why request for a big ring?

SOB got most of the money, got to pick his personal referee and judges.......................SOB will wrestle, throw punches to the testicles and legs, hold, headbutt a lot, elbows, etc. Why did SOB say that neutral judges would be unfair? SOB had Robert Tyrd to ref the first fight, he allowed SOB to cheat over and over............Kovalev still out classed SOB..................

Thank you for this information. So anotherwords, what chitownfightfan said about the Canelo Lara ring being 18 feet then is impossible. The Canelo Lara looked all of 20 feet to me if not bigger. If you want to see a ring smaller than 20 feet, take a look at some of Canelo's early fights in Mexico. Some of those rings were much smaller and probably were 18 feet if I had to guess, just by watching some of those fights you can tell they were much smaller.

If you're saying that the Mayweather Pacquiao ring was 24 feet, then Kovalev Ward 1 must have been at least 24 feet because frankly the ring in Kovalev Ward 1 looked bigger than the ring in Pacquiao Mayweather or at least as big as that, especailly when you consider that the ring looks even bigger when you have smaller fighters. (in that there's more percieved area for smaller fighters to manuever in a ring that's the same size)

Frankly, the rings in some of Ali's 1970s fights looked way bigger than the Mayweather Pacquiao ring or the Kovalev Ward 1 ring. So yeah it sounds right that 20 feet is the absolute minimum in Vegas with 24 foot rings still being somewhat common. Based on the information you've provided, if I had to guess, I'd say that it's probable that the ring for Ward Kovalev 1 must have been 24 feet and Duva and Kovalev wanted the minimum size of 20 feet for the rematch. Does that sound right to you alexland? I really think all fights should specify how big the ring is prior to the bout, as that's a piece of information that boxing fans and particularly those that bet on fights should have as they generate their predictions.

Are you implying that Ward wants to run? Last time I checked Ward isn't considered a runner. I figure Ward would want a small ring, 3' x 3' so he can head butt the hell out of Kov. Big ring or small ring, bought refs or legit refs, roids or no roids, biased judges or honest judges, Ward is winning the fight.

I think it was the Angulo Vs Lara fight that was a 18 foot ring not Canelo Vs Lara.

Caper and brain damage...it is just for shits and giggles. Anything can happen, and often it is not what is expected. However, I do believe Ward is going down for the count on saturday.

Ward is the better inside fighter, a smaller ring size
would advantage him more than Kovalev, I'm
sure Ward's team readily gave that concession.

I watched a you an@lysis of the fight and it was mentioned that Lara had little room for movement.

But he did get a FAT check, and won 7-5 in the eyes of MOST.

Not bad considering a 20 ft ring would clinched those rds where Yeller was able to catch Lara on the hips as he turned out from the corner.

NSAC, on their own website, say that requests for exemptions will be considered on event by event basis.

Not saying 100% that the youtuber breaking the fight down was correct, but he made mention of it on several occasions, and let's not pretend that Oscar can't get the exemption for his star.
And the NSAC would certainly oblige.

However, there is NOTHING on the web proving the ring size except what this youtuber claims, so, in the nature of not believing 1/2 of what you read, or anything you hear, without first vetting the news.....I yield to the NSAC standard of 20+'

I was just wondering what made you say that the Canelo Lara ring was 18 feet. Just looking at the video of the fight, the ring appears to be normal sized, or at least the normal minimum, which is apparently 20 feet. I think we can confidently conclude that that ring was 20 feet at least. Then again, we really have no way of knowing or verifying that, which is something I think we as fans should be provided with for each fight.

I'm guessing that the youtuber that stated that the ring was 18 feet was probably doing so as part of an argument to state that Lara deserved to win, or was somehow treated unfairly with a ring size that gave Canelo a huge advantage, and the youtuber simply made up the fact that he thought the ring was 18 feet because he was bitter that Canelo won lol. (as we know people will make up anything to try to discredit Canelo's victories lol)

It was simply a way to act like Canelo was getting special treatment with a tiny ring so that Lara couldn’t run as much. In reality that was completely made up and that ring wasn’t any smaller than usual. Lara had more than enough room to run . . . he could run and he ran all night but he couldn’t hide from Canelo.

Ward does his best work on Kovalev on the inside so this makes little sense.
