Our anger regarding Ward-Kovalev II should be directed towards Tony Weeks

Very well said. Refs job is to enforce the rules of the sport. Period.
Weeks did a terrible job.

Even if it is real, I blame Kovalev for not bringing it. He talked a lot of mess and acted like this big menace. But it was Andre who kicked his behind. No excuses.

 

A lot of those weren't low blows, they were shots on the belt line/equator.

When Kovalev kept pawing out that lazy left hand, Ward ducked underneath and threw body shots, hence the reason for the belt line shots. There might have been one or two low blows, but nothing that seemed intentional given how low he ducked underneath Kovalev's left hand.

All you have to do is see early in the 7th round when Kovalev was complaining of a low blow which clearly it wasn't. At that juncture, it was seemingly evident to me that Sergey was looking for a way out.

I don't agree with the stoppage, but Kovalev should thank Weeks because Ward was really putting it on him and if the ref allowed him to continue, Ward might've shortened the remainder of Sergey's career.

Let him regroup and take on another LHW for the time being. He lost to a better fighter last night, plain and simple.

The fighters do what they do. It's their job to win and if Ward bent the rules then he wouldn't be the first to do so. I just think Kovalev should have fed him some of his own medicine in return.

I understand referees must protect fighters, but they also have a duty to uphold the rules and to make sure that the fighters get a fair shake. Weeks failed in both counts and is a shtty referee.

 

Tony will be laying low for a few weeks counting his winnings from the huge bet he had on ward by tko.

 

bad stoppage. missed low blows multiple times... and even if they were legal shots.. no count? like wtf ... boxing in America is becoming disgrace. the uk fights have much better interest at the moment.

 

It's also a fighters job to stick to the rules but the SOB Ward doesn't understand the word Boxing, a massively overrated dirty piece of shite!

 

I am and always will be a boxing fan. However the way this fight ended is
why UFC has grown so strong at boxing expense. We should be talking about
the fight but because of Weeks we are talking about how corrupt the sport is
and i can't blame the members for this as i am just as outraged as you.
PS I just wanted to see a fight with no controversial like Joshua vs Klitschko.

 

So which refs are actually good now? We all saw how swift and over-the-top the backlash was against Bayless and Byrd for Mayweather-Maidana 2 and Kovalev-Ward 1. Bayless was the best ref in Vegas but since he dared not abide Maidana's dirty tactics, he was therefore a terrible busybody. It seemed like Weeks was the main beneficiary since people praised his allowing Maidana to foul Mayweather all night, but now it seems like he's ticked off that same segment of boxing fans.

It seems to be the case in the eyes of some fans there are no good referees in the entire sport.

 

Amen! Somebody with some sense. If you watch that round closely theres a point that Kov touches his abdomen as if hes in some discomfort. He was getting hit with body shots all night and the two shown in that gif were clearly not low blows. Kov got broken down by body work. Plain and simple. Weeks did a great job last night.
