Last night was easily the most upset ive ever been after a fight ended. I hate to see a fight end the way it did especially with one of my favorite fighters. I was rooting for Pacquiao vs Mayweather. TBE beat him. Didnt dispute the loss. Some did. Me, I saw it for what it was. This fight was different man. This fight was 2 guys, BOTH undefeated, BOTH P4P level. BOTH in their prime. The Ward Kov saga was much more meaningful, at least to me. If was like May Pac happening in 2010 for me. Not the 2015 Marquez KTFO6. After Marquez slept Manny, I never cared much for the mega fight. So back to Ward Kov. These are my thoughts. Fight 1: politics got in the way, and Ward got the nod, just barely. Fight 2: Ward came out better than he did in the first fight. But Kov was throwing lots of punches. He won 5-2 in the first 7 rounds. Ok, make it 4-3 to be fair. Ward recalled Sergey not liking the body work, especially on the belt line. He aimed for that spot. Some of those shots came low. When you aim there it gonna happen. Weeks completely blew it. Was it Partisan as Paulie said? I think so to a point. Im sure Weeks deep down inside wanted Ward to beat this Russian. Its human nature, right? Im sure if the ref was from St. Petersburg than he'd be more apt to penalize Ward for the low blows. Round 8 the atrocity. At 1:45 in the round Ward hit him low. It was BELOW that belt line. It was a foul. No time for Sergey. Up until that point he was winning that round. Then at 1 min the right hand. The unraveling. Then the worst stoppage ive seen. Worse than Froch Groves I. Except now there will be no rematch. F it. I dont want to see it anymore. Ward threw a great left hook. He also threw the right hand. He fought well on the inside. His activity wasnt that great tho. Sergey did outwork Ward through many parts of the rounds thats why i gave him 5 rounds. But where was Sergey left hand??? He threw the jab yes but where was his left hook?? He was right hand happy? And he sloppily threw the 1-2 combo. Sometimes with no hope of landing. Ward didnt throw just to throw. Ward showed the higher IQ. This is where Sergey is a Kitty and not a krusher. WHY DIDNT HE FOUL HIM BACK! IF THIS MAN IS GONNA FOUL YOU AND THE REF BASICALLY SAY U ARE ON YOUR OWN IF YOU NEED TO BREATHE YOU CRACK HIM IN SACK TOO. Show that fighting spirit man. Show that you want it. Now Ward has the 3 titles and Kov career is in ruins. That stoppage was an atrocity. AJ was in far worse shape in round 6 but he came back to beat Klitchko. Ward was gassed too look at him at round 8 in the first minute he looked like crap. But its over now. Sergey had to take matters into his own hands but failed to do so. Weeks demonstrated he wasnt gonna enforce the rules especially in round 7 and round 8. He let Ward take his soul. So that is all. I'm still disgusted by what happened. A penalty should have been imposed with a point loss and a 5 min breather. But instead we got a FOUL INDUCED STOPPAGE in a P4P level fight. Ok then. I expect Canelo to win his fight in Sept 16. If GGG wins 7-5 expect to see cards of 8-4 canelo. Thats what boxing has turned into now. But I'm not gonna invest my emotional energy into it because Ive seen enough dirt. Ill buy that fight because I like the fighters. Not sure how many more tho. Peace
Calm down man. I'm devastated and too disappointed to analyse. The more versatile and mentally tougher fighter won and the referee did a poor job. I'll leave it at that.
Man take easy its just a sport this look like a last election I hope you will forget and move on remember you are as good as your last fight.
kovalev isn't upper echelon. he's too simple. he doesn't even know how to fight fire with fire, boxing 101.. if a guy fights dirty, you cannot depend on the ref to make it right. how could kovalev possibly have missed that lesson this far into it? after the last fight, he should have been the first one to throw a low blow.. first round.
Understand how you're feeling and agree with a lot of what you said. 2 things: - I thought the first two body shots that hurt Kovalev in the 8th round were borderline shots, on the belt line (legal) - I think Kovalev will be fine. He just needs to adjust on two matters =====> 1) stamina/conditoning/not-overtraining, and 2) protecting his body against someone looking to continually attack him there Kovalev acquitted himself well in the two bouts against Ward. He struggled (and had help from Meeks and low blows) in Round 8 of the second fight. I think he'll be fine and he'll be back. Duva says Kovalev will fight on HBO before the end of the year.
The reality is that it isn't about Kovalev per se, but every Kovalev. What Kov represents. That a foreigner can come here and actually make a career out of boxing. Not a Mexican. Not pacquio the rare example. But a Russian. But the Russian got Xd out. Just like that. GGG is the next victim. And eventually when Loma is up against the next hot 135 pounder they will feed him too Now I know. That's also why boxing in America is dead.
I share your disgust on this matter. I'm an American, and it makes me ill. It really does. What Joshua and the Klitschkos have shown is that you don't have to fight in America to make big money. So there is hope for non-American fighters in the future, I think.
Yea Kovalev should have gone low too... he should also should have wrestled him back.... I think he will be back... ward will vacate all the belts and then this stacked division can get back to boxing without ward...
Every fighter has an Achilles heel. Kov don't like it to the body. Sure a few of the blows were borderline but they were to the lower stomach...not his groin. They should not have had the massive effect they did. Took all the fight out of Kov.
