Punch count scoreboard: yay or nay

We don't need that specifically but instead the big ticket is open scoring on all fights.

 

That's essentially amateur computerised scoring.
I do think they need to rethink boxing scoring to minimise the subjective elements of scoring the fight. In the old timer period, they used to give it to the aggressor generally.

 

It might help, but power punches won't be counted. I'd be down for some trial fights under two conditions:

1) Live Scoring: the ticker on screen needs to move as the fight plays.

2) Method: ditch the conventional method of tracking punches. Maybe have 3 guys per fighter, then average out their count.

This would give fans a more concrete score and help rid of SOME excuses.

 

Nah, you dont remove the subjectivity from the the scoring. Since it would be a person counting the hits, exactly the same that there is a person judging the fight.

 

Then we would be complaining how a fighter never engaged after the 8th round because he knew he was up by 5-6 points.

Still have the judges there to do a preliminary score.. i.e. not final

but during the fight have five cameras (4 on each side, one on top) focused on and following the fighters and the fight. After the fight immediately hand the data to analysts. then have a post fight conference about the fight with complete fight round by round breakdown with frames/images shown as evidence to show who really won the final decision.

additionaly have another ref in case the one in the ring is not doing enough.

 

Good suggestion but I voted No for both open scoring and punch stat. You can't fully eliminate error with punch count and it doesn't take into account the quality of the punch. Open scoring is a definite no no for me, took the whole drama out of a fight.

Judges are human, so they are prone to bias, preference, err and influence. The 4 criterial of scoring itself is subjective in its interpretation.
The only suggestion I can put forward is to increase the number of judges to 5. Maybe one can can judge the telecast from the monitor without commentator sound and the other can watch from an above angle in the arena.

 

More judges is the answer, as well as banning judges who turn in bad scores often. Should be a three strikes rule, based on an interview and review of their scoring by the commission if their card is controversial.

Maybe even have 20 more judges watching the telecast from their home with no sound, for championship fights. Whose identity is not revealed until after the fight, good luck buying all those guys off.

 

It would be great if it wasn't the fact humans are doing the scoring, what to say they get it right???

 

Add a ton more judges, throw out top and bottom 25% cards that are far enough off the common agreement. A person may screw it up, maybe two or three people, but a big group can't really screw it up unless they're all bought.

 

Against, because it will be just as bogus and fraudulent as CompuBox. It's impossible to get accurate punch stats in regards to landed punches while watching a fight live. It's why CompuBox sucks so bad. You can only get accurate punch stats upon video review. It's why CompuBox has no accuracy, and why Olympic scoring sucks.

 

They should just let Teddy Atlas be the sole dictator in determining the winner of a fight.

 

You mean the fight is decided by number of punches landed?

Definite nay.

Fighters would just throw the lightest punches possible to preserve stamina.

It would also favor garbage fighters who simply throw very fast like Amir Khan.
