A fighter I rarely think of to mention that I greatly admire is Marlon Starling...ol' Moochie was a favorite of mine...I really dug how he popped the balloon of that "Second Coming of SSR" Mark Breland,...how he rivalled the one time phenom Donald Curry and the way he came back from that travesty of justice in losing by an after the bell shot from Tomas Molinares to utterly master and humble Lloyd Honeyghan the way he did. I think he was a master of defense with that high guard of his and I even forgave him for that showboating crap like the "Starling Stomp". He was a classic underachiever who was greater than he appeared to be IMO. This vid pays tribute to him. This content is protected
I really liked him. Very underrated offense because his defense was so good. Threw nice combinations. Really exposed Honeyghan.
Didn't like him at the time especially duffing up Lloyd honeymonster on my 16th birthday the rotter.really like his stile now very underrated one for the purists.
Yeah that was a masterful performance against Honeyghan. One of the things I remember most about that fight was in the prefight build-up, Honeyghan was talking all kind of sh*t about what he was going to do to Starling and the beating he was going to give him and Starling just said something along the lines that Lloyd will end up wanting to be his friend during the fight which seem to be a most peculiar thing to say and I just couldn't work out what he meant by that. Lo and behold in the actual fight, as Starling gradually wore down the hyped up Honeyghan with a display of superb defense and counter punching, what do we see as the fight was reaching its end and Marlon seemingly landing all the effective punches? Lloyd turns around at the bell to end one of the rounds and kinda submissively pats Marlon on the behind as he walked past. Then it hit me that this is what Starling meant when he said that Honeyghan will end up wanting to be his friend as the fight wore on. LOL!
Love watching the guy, personally. Anyone remember him exposing the big punching, hyped up Jose Baret? He just completely nullified the guys entire offense. It was a serene kind of performance.
Second best 147 of his era and possibly one of the best three or four defensive fighters around his time.
Marlon was a very good fighter. I could see him lasting the distance against Hearns, Leonard, and Duran. Shame he didn't get a fight with Milton McCrory, but he has to take the blame for that. Easily a top 10, 20 welter of all-time.
Could anyone recommend any must see fights (hopefully on YouTube) by Starling? I was always under the impression he was boring, but I can only think it was due to reading articles on his fight with Nunn (was it)? Sent from my B3-A30 using Tapatalk
I loved how he let Honeyghan walk to him and wear himself out landing about 10 percent of his shots, unable to penetrate Marlon's shell, then countered beautifully all night long until Lloyd submitted mentally about the sixth round. Then he cleaned up , effectively ruining what was left of Honeyghan's prime. Honeyghan was an empty shell after Starling was done with him.
