So what was this website like the day after Lewis-Klitshcko?

I was always under the impression that "The Event" at a boxing match is... well... the boxing match. :think

However it seems that "The Event" refers to crowd reaction. In that case you are right, Hatton won against Mayweather.
As did Gatti (who is actually undefeated).
And Oscar (likewise, undefeated).

Who is going to break the news to Floyd that he actually has 3 losses? :yep

 

Oh that definitely has nothing to do with who won, it's all about who impressed the crowd more and who the crowd favored. The Vitali fight not many were fond of Vitali before the fight and was given no chance whatsoever, last I remember the Hatton fight was still a close call with many different people picking Hatton and many picking Floyd. The Gatti fight was totally pro Floyd and Gatti lost the way he was expected to lose, by knockout. Vitali's case is totally different, it was a tough competitive fight, not many really gave him any chance but still stopped by the doctor and for good reason in a fight that was still close. Would he have KO'd Lewis after the 6th?, my answer/prediction is no, it was Vitali who was going to get knocked out but still the situation in general was different and the proof is that many asked for a rematch. It was hardly a one-sided floored 3 times type of TKO or stopped after too many unanswered punches type of TKO, it was in his corner with a brutal cut and with that cut he was being competitive, taking shots and landing his own. When a rematch is called for by everyone after a tough close fight you know the first fight was competitive, if it was a one-sided fight in favor of Lewis where he was only hurt once then sure, no one will make a big deal about a rematch but that's not what happened. Lewis won fair and square but still a rematch was needed since Vitali's downfall was a cut and only that, it was hardly Lewis dominating from the start. But yes, Lewis retiring and saying he had nothing left to prove IS true and a Vitali rematch/win would've done him good but didn't really need it.

 

I agree with all of that Scar, but people say "Lennox won the fight, but Vitali won the event" as if they are equal achievements and somehow cancel each other out.

Who the crowd cheers loudest for is no more significant than who is tallest, who has longer fingernails or who can eat the most hamburgers. None of that matters, but we have to hear it over and over every time this fight is mentioned as if it is as significant as actually winning the fight.

Well whoever says that and means it as 50/50 is a fool, the result was obvious and 100% fair. Also, whoever thinks that Vitali would've KO'd Lewis after the 6th is even a bigger idiot.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the infamous "There is no doubt Vitali was going to get KO'ed" thread...That thing went on forever, I think years....maybe someone can start another one.

 

Vitali failed the Olympic steroid test but won the event.

 

Amazing that after 5 years we're still talking about this fight..so much for Lewis being a boring fighter as this may be the most talked about fight in ESB ever!!!

And face it, it was an awesome fight, but not nearly as contriversal as some make it out to be, it was a clear and legit victory for Lewis in my eyes, and props to both fighters for fighting their hearts out and giving us something to remember. If anyone wants to know why we're boxing fans, they only need to watch this fight to see why. Action packed drama for 6 full rounds. Truthfully though, even though though I thoroughly enjoyed the entire fight, I'm actually extremely surprised that it went on for as long as it did, given the severety of those cuts. I've been watching boxing for over 30 years and I don't recall seeing a fighter that cut up before. (course it could have happened and I simply didn't see the fight)

 

I wasn't a member but I used to browse the boards. The board was inundated with topics about the fight. You'd have thought that every other weight class had suddenly disappeared overnight. I didn't even want to post on the front page because anything I had to say had probably been said 100 times over.

The fact that sitting down 'very hard' on your stool proves you were going to get KO'd much more than having half your face hanging off.

Secret signs from Lewis to the "paid off black doctor" to stop the fight because of said stool slumping.

Zillions of pounds offered for "promised" rematches that Lewis backed out of.

Vitlay (apart from being called Vitlay because of it) being crowned "undisputed peoples champion of the world" that night.

The argument that Vitlay was unprepared for the fight, and Lewis was in tip top shape. As all guys are when fighting the beacon of fitness Kirk Johnson...

Vitlay being able to run around the ring with butterfly tape on his cuts minutes after the stoppage proving that he had enough energy to KO the very tired Lewis (see "stool stump rule" above). Ignore you can't tape up cuts during a fight. Ignore that he was no longer being punched in the face. Ignore that Vitlay was on very shaky legs at the end of Round 6. (but he sat down in a controlled manner..)

The "Vitlay blood rule" being in force. Meaning that if you're beaten to a pulp so bad that the fight is stopped at the half way mark - you get to go to the cards. Doesn't matter that it took you being battered to almost blindness to be ahead that one swing round, YOU WERE WINNING GODDAMN IT.




It was great.

 

Yes, someone pointed out the other day that Lewis would have only got a draw if he'd won 4 of the next 6 rounds, and that wouldn't have happened because he'd lost 4 of the previous 6. :rofl
