Most of their opponents, as soon as the bell rang did show that they didn't have any business being in there.
Has to be Liston. For someone with a HW resume weaker than Anthony Joshua he sure has an incredibly high rating and that's down to how fearsome he's looked in his victories. I mean Floyd Patterson came with a disguise so he could sneak out.
It's Tyson for me. He was a short stocky guy and just about everyone he fought was bigger than him yet that didn't stop most of them from looking like they were literally fearing for their lives before a punch was even thrown. Frank Bruno, around 6'4", 245 pounds and build like a man-mountain , in the ring walk in their second fight, was crossing himself so often and frantically he looked like a man walking to the electric chair rather than a boxing ring.
Frank Bruno wasn't 6'4 and 245 pounds. Frank was 6'2/6'3 220. Unless you are going to use his past his prime weight. Tyson also weighed 220 pounds himself. So Tyson was shorter than most people he faced but not lighter. Also you are going to pick one fight to use as your point? Frank Bruno wasn't know for being some tough guy. So him being intimidated by Tyson proved what? As I said Tyson intimidated weak minded guys. He couldn't even intimidate Buster Douglas. In Foreman's prime he pretty much intimidated everybody besides Ron Lyle and Joe Frazier. Foreman when he came back still caused most people to run from him even though he was trying to be a nice guy.
I didn't know we had to pick a number of fights to use so as to justify our choices? Bruno was a big tough guy. Who else that he fought intimidated him? And I wasn't using Bruno's past prime weight. I was using more or less the actual weight that he was when he fought Tyson in their second fight. Anyway why should I have to justify my pick or opinion to you? Just add your own choice in your posts as suggested by the OP and stop trying to rubbish other people's choice just because it differs from yours
Exactly. Lennox Lewis, Tim Witherspoon, Oliver McCall all failed to intimidate Bruno despite being pretty fearsome but Tyson made Frank look like he was terrified. Frank's an excellent gauge for what happened when a fighter met Mike. Normally sound but facing Tyson made him lose all the confidence that being champ had given him.
Impossible question to answer...there are too many variables. I say they're virtually equal in the intimidation department. It's as futile as debating which venomous snake is the most venomous...the answer to that one is "the one that just bit you"...likewise, the most intimidating of the three mentioned in this thread should be left up to the guys they faced and intimidated last.
I'd pick Tyson. There was something unusual about him, he wasn't just a physical brute, there was an intelligence about his intimidation. The fact he had a nightmare style helped, devistating combinations that looked horrible to get caught by. I think even the high pitched voice was scary funnily enough, it added to his unusual demeanour.
I would have voted for Joe Louis but out of those 3 it I would pick Sonny Liston. He just had that aura about him. The stare was part of it. George modeled himself after Sonny. He was both big and quick with the ability to outbox his opponent as well as outslug him.
I'm going with George Foreman, simply because he had the power to knock a man out of the ring and looked like he was trying to kill his opponents. I've never seen fighters react to being hit the way his opponents did.
Bruno wasn't as scared to me in the first fight. In the rematch I think he knew there was a reason to be scared, not only did he know Tyson was fearsome but he witnessed the savagery first hand by that devistating finish in their first fight. It's not a case of just being intimidated, he had the evidence to back up why he was scared and he couldn't get over it. Even though Tyson was coming off that layoff.
Probably Foreman. Liston didn't intimidate Eddie Machen, and Tyson definitely didn't intimidate Mitch Green, though probably no body could do that, truthfully.
