I did a search and didn't find any results... So here's Dempsey vs Quarry. Is it not even competitive? How would you make a case for Quarry? Could you make a case for Quarry? Should you make a case for Quarry? I think its an interesting fight while it lasts. Discuss.
I could make a case that should Dempsey beat a prime Quarry, that Quarry would be the best heavyweight he ever beat.
Quarry does not last the first rounds vs the best Dempsey. Quarry was too quick to mix it up and Dempsey way too destructive.
Earnie Shavers liked to mix it up, too. What exactly is the "best" Dempsey? Is that guy who beat a hay farmer and retired amateur boxer?
Best Dempsey I would say was vs Willard. I say this because Dempsey himself stated he was at his very peak for that bout. Secondly the greatest boxing trainer, Ray Arcel, also felt this bout was Dempsey at his physical best. Arcel had watched Dempsey live since his NY debut vs John Lester Johnson. Dempsey had unusually powerful blows. Willard showed how his cheekbone was still cracked decades after that bout. Sharkey was also adamant that not only did Dempsey hit harder than Joe Louis but in addition he stated that "he never thought anyone could hit that hard". The combination of Quarry's willingness to mix it up and Dempseys one punch ko power in both fists makes this a very short night for Quarry.
Dempsey 6'1", 78" reach, 195 lbs. Quarry 6'0", 72" reach, 195 lbs. Prime Dempsey just too fast afoot, and hits too hard. Quarry goes out on his shield in mid-rounds. Quarry is about the best of the 70's heavies I would pick Jack to beat prime for prime. And that's quite a compliment for somebody from his era..
Dempsey a good example of an outlier. His style and ability is credible for decades after his own. I can see solid reasons for Quarry, and wouldn't be surprised to see him win. If Dempsey goes life and death with Firpo, he may be in for a rough night with Quarry, who punches 100× more accurate with counterpunches. Dempsey was also on the deck so many times he's second only to Patterson in knockdown suffered by a HW champ. Quarry fought and beat much bigger, better fighters than Dempsey's opposition in general. I can also see the obvious reasons for Dempsey. I don't think Dempsey would necessarily get the bad end of the exchanges. Dempsey could and probably would damage Quarry for a stoppage with higher, more quality contact.
Jerry talked about a fight with Jack and felt a modern boxer (himself) could step inside his sometimes wide hooks with straight right hands which sounds good but lots of Dempsey's punches were very short both to the head and body. In Jerry's '67 go with Frazier it was short shots like those which wore Quarry out by the fifth round, you could see him losing steam punch by punch and that was Jerry's physical prime. Shot for shot I think Jack hit harder then Frazier and was faster, to me its iron against hard oak and Dempsey would just beat Jerry down.
A case could be made that anyone being ko'd by Chuvalo has very little chance of beating Jack Dempsey. Bill Brennan would give Quarry a very interesting nights work,like-wise Billy Miske ,imo.
