In terms of skillset, he's in my top 20. He left a lot on the table (pun intended) in terms of being considered a top 10 or 20 or 30 ATG. He was in oblivion at LHW and CW for like 10 years straight before moving on and beating up Jirov at CW, then going to HW.
My point was an old Tony got better heavyweight wins then wilder that's all I'm saying and his middleweight smw and LHW was impressive
An exceptional talent. He probably is top 10 yes....Never stayed at a weight long enough to dominate for a good while, but every now and then against great opposition you seen what he was about ! Everything in spades but discipline ! Boxing pureists probably have him around top 10-20 on average I'm guessing, he was that good
It's hard to put him up there if u consider accomplishments... Watching him fight was a thing of beauty though...that Barkley fight is poetry
a great chin and great natural fighter / but a lazy trainer all through his career and no regard to watch his diet blew his weight and led to him not being the champ he should have been
arguably got a robbery against unknown dave tiberi, outboxed by nunn before nunn gassed toward the end, dropped by and struggled against reggie johnson, and this was all at what many cite as his best weight. he was extremely gifted and it's a shame you don't see fighters like him anymore, but as others have said, conditioning/preparation/consistency were a big problem for him. HoF guy for sure, not a top 10 or even necessarily top 100 ATG in my book, though he had the tools to be in the latter so it depends what your criteria for inclusion are really.
I love James Toney but he's not a top ten on resume or anywhere near close. He's not top ten in skill either. I'd definitely rank him top ten if it was rating defence and fighting on the inside. He was a bad man in that area and as slick as anyone. He just wasn't complete enough to be considered top ten. His flat feet were an issue.
