I used to love boxing illustrated when I was a teenager, Sugar was the editor back then and I respected everything that was written in his magazine but a number of things he`s said were way off, he said Floyd Mayweather was good but not great, that Marciano had no defense and that the Klitchko`s were worse than Primo Carnera, I don`t think he was as good at judging fighters as what was made out, no disrespect Sugar a lot of fun and a charismatic figure in the sport, I just think he was biased in his opinions, what does everyone else think?

Sugar could be a bitter old man hypnotized by nostalgia a lot of the time... Truly said some ridiculous things, like the Klitschkos would lose to Primo Carnera.. LOL! Talk about rose tinted glasses!

Thought he gave the best description of Kostya Tszyu I ever heard:

"I once saw him knock a man down twice with one punch".

I was never much of a fan of him and his schtick. I believe he also ran Boxing Illustrated into the ground due to plagiarism claims.

Jack Newfield was a much better writer and boxing historian.

And yes, of course Bert Sugar got some fighters wrong. He didn't even rank Michael Spinks in his top 100 fighters of all time.

Sugar was a failed baseball writer who also nearly bankrupted Ring Magazine jet setting around the US on non business.

Sugar just proved that "guys-in-the-know" oftentimes don't KSAB.

One thing I really noticed about Sugar was, he did not talk much boxing, just the stories behind the actual fights.

He had poetic ways of describing things, that and his hat and cigar made him money. It was that easy.

    PS Sugar's books are awful.

Sugar was nuts. Completely unreliable. He had a hard on for past boxers and wouldn't give anyone after 1960 their props.

Boxing writers and historians are just people who couldnt make it in to an actual respectable profession. Failed authors, failed engineers and artists ( Not the singing type). In other words as moronic as 80 percent of the people here and other forums.

He was the Dan Rafael of his time. Genuinely loved boxing from what I saw but some of his writing was extremely off.

He was more of a personality with affectations, a persona used to sell boxing, like say "Money Mayweather." I figure Teddy Atlas tries to do that too to a certain extent. "We are firemen!"
