Ray Leonard vs Hector Camacho

Leonard was the definition of a "diva" in boxing. Other boxers had to kiss his ass to get a fight with him. He even had a press conference with Hagler attending to announce that he wasn't going to fight Hagler knowing that Hagler desperately wanted the fight. I could go on about this guy. To me, he wasn't a very likeable character.

Ray was dumb to take his fight. 6 years out of retirement after Norris beat him every round. This was at the end of the 90s ,and his only fight in the 90s was the beating to Norris.

 

My friend from Ft Worth TX Donald Curry was ringside for this debacle He was there to embarra s Leonard into fighting him.over the way Leonard stabbed him in the back. But after seeing Leonards pathetic showing Don said " I wouldn't embarrass myself by challenging him "

 

Your friend from FT Worth, Donald Curry, would have gotten stopped by Leonard prime for prime.

So why is a threat of a former 130 pounder moving up to middle that big of a mountain to climb? And this is not a 23 year old Camacho we are talking about either. 34.

So a guy moves up 6 weight classes and has been boxing more than a decade. But we are supposed to give Leonard a pass/get out of jail free card on the fight because he was having to climb mt everrest to have his hand raised at the end?

I sure don't buy it. Leonard wearing those shoes himself should have fought a guy like JC Gomez at cruiser. It was supposed to be an easy night's work for Ray. Even more troubling is the fact he managed to get stopped by the former jr lightweight. Camacho at those heavier weights had zero ko's over elite competition.

 

I read that Leonard was owned by the Gambino family.....................Hagler beat Leonard, Hearns did also. When Duran last fought Leonard, their 3rd fight, his mother was locked in Duran's dressing room, at the end of the fight Duran put 63 stitches in Leonard's face. After the fight, Duran said that he just wanted the fans to know what he could have done to Leonard if he had wanted to................One day he will tell the truth..................back then the mafia owned Vegas and now I sometimes wonder if the mob still owns Vegas, look at all the corruption going on............

 

Leonard was the favorite because a very old Roberto Duran had recently beaten but got robbed vs Camacho. Leonard was at ringside doing commentary for USA network during that Duran-Camacho fight, and seeing as to how Leonard witnessed Duran handling Camacho, Leonard was of the thinking Camacho would be fairly easy pickings for himself.

It was Camacho who called Leonard out right after he had gotten the decision, and Leonard shouted back at Camacho,"you got beat, Duran beat you!"

So there you have it, Leonard was made the favorite by the odds makers because Camacho looked terrible vs Duran.

 

You sound like a Curry groupie, simply because you know the guy.

Curry was an EXCELLENT fighter, don't get me wrong. If he was around today, I'd no doubt favor him over guys like Thurman and Garcia. But he lacked the intangibles to transition over from being an excellent fighter to a great.

Leonard would have taken Curry into deep waters and drowned him. He was a much tougher fighter, both physically and mentally.

Curry's style was also a tad bit too stiff and upright to deal with the more dynamic Leonard and his speed.

Leonard would have stopped Curry. It's really not that debatable.... except by Donald Curry's friends apparently...

 

Apart from the fact he's a c--t?
The debacle against Hagler? The gift against Hearns? The start of boxing's slide into obscurity. I'm sure he's a stand up guy.

 

I doubt Macho would leap into the ring with a prime Leonard.
