Judah was just trying to feint out and confuse floyd (of course this is just my opinion since im not a mind reader). what judah has in speed, fitzsimmons has in power so i think the threat of the erratic hand moving would work, to the point where the opponent is reluctant to engage and gives even more evidence to posters lamenting the primitivity of skills seen.

i think the point youre making is that fighters of old are criticized for supposed outdated techniques and skills when the same skills can be seen today. i would agree. the only thing changed to me is better nutrition, but this is also hindered by the ever growing number of pseudoscience and malpractitioners that always accompany the more boring proven science and its facilitators.

there is the argument of availability of film, that there is vast amount of knowledge to be gained from, to be used by fighters and trainers. well let me ask this, have fighters evolved past styles? are the majority of fighters today like mayweather and lomachenko, can they all box and slug and brawl? are they more suited to switching game plans on a whim, can they change the strategies theyve downloaded into their brains at the click of a button? can golovkin dance like ali off the backfoot and flicker jab an opponent to frustration? can luis ortiz come forward while throwing punches like a lamotta? is every fighter today able to move laterally, punch in combinations, able to feint effectively, move their head, create angles? my answer is no

Not so. Or at best this is the result of economic conditions and not any advances in nutrition per se. Anyone who could afford reasonable quantities of meat and fresh produce in 1900 is apt to be *better* nourished than an average 21st century American.

I watched Klitchsko/Lewis and I thought to myself if this were in black and white and this were Buddy Baer fighting Primo Carnera the more "modern fighters are automatically better" crowd would talk about how unskilled and oafish they looked.

Just like the punchers of old like Joe Louis sometimes get dismissed as not having real power compared to modern day heavies. But imagine if that right cross that made Buddy Baer who was the size of Riddick Bowe, spin to the canvas was in modern, HD color on your 60 inch wall mounted flat screen?

Maybe if it were the only Lewis or Vitali fight available on film. But even in black and white footage, we would be able to readily recognize things that both men did much better than a Carnera, just like we can watch old films from several Carnera fights and clearly observe a number of obvious flaws and limitations (well, about 90% of us can do this, anyway).

 

Only someone with little knowledge of the sport or history would ever question Louis's power.
