I think Floyd's achievements past 35 should be taken into account when we discuss who had better career overall. Whitaker was gone at 35, whereas Floyd scored wins over Cotto, Alvarez, Pac - all were elite opponents. Also good wins over Maidana twice, decent wins over Guerrero, Berto. And Whitaker suffered from few bad decisions (1st 'loss' to Ramirez, 'draw' vs JCC, 'wide loss' to ODLH in a fight that could've gone either way).
Pea was more naturally talented and could Do some things inside the ring at nobody else could. But Mayweather had a better career. Head to head at their best I would pick Pea but Mayweather could always make adjustments during a fight.
Pea was better. Don't be fooled by Floyd's greater longevity... prime-for-prime, Whitaker was the superior fighter.
As for the answer to this thread, I think Pea was more skilled but Mayweather had the better and longer career but that could have been different if Pernell stayed away from the drugs.
Floyd Mayweather was better than Pernell Whitaker at everything. Sorry. It's true. Better boxer. Better puncher. More titles won. Better wins. More KOs over better fighters. More dominant wins over top fighters. More popular among fans and even casuals than Whitaker could ever dream to be. Floyd will have wins over a half-dozen hall of famers when all is said and done. Whitaker didn't score a single win over a Hall of Famer. Hell, I didn't even think Whitaker beat Wilfredo Rivera the first time. And can you imagine if Floyd Mayweather just quit in a fight against a guy like Carlos Bojorquez? Mayweather is the winner. Hands down. Not even close. Hell, Roger Mayweather dropped Pernell on his @ss, and Roger wasn't in Floyd's league. Who decked Floyd? Who did Floyd quit against?
