Hagler looked impotent...a totally spent force..he was a big step behind what he once had...the great timing and range of hand and foot the sharpness and boxing iq. Leonard himself was way past his best
Ray was on his second defense of his first title. When Tyson beat Pinklon Thomas was he peak? He was good and had momentum, but he didn't have that much experience. No Ray was not in his prime. That is what Duran fans say to make it look like the best win ever. Duran's only win against an elite is against Ray and then Ray outclassed him in the rematch.
I don't think Hagler was ever the same after Hearns. He put his all mentally and physically into that fight and reached what he wanted. Recognition. I think that was what he wanted and he didn't have motivation after that, which is why he was inactive after Hearns for a year and was rusty vs. Mugabi. Then he was rusty again another year preparing for Ray.
It has to be Hagler vs SRL for me...not sure how one could pick the other realistically. Hagler vs SRL was super close and although I had Hagler edging it, I think narrow SRL win or draw are realistic cards to have. Duran vs SRL is a close and competitive fight, that I hear very few outside of his biggest fans, questioning the decision. To me it is between an ultra difficult to score fight, very close and easily defendable verdict either way (unless you were the guy who scored Leonard by 8 lol). And a competitive fight where although the decision is close it is really in question either. Just my take
Definitely Leonard-Hagler I thought it was a two point fight either way Duran seemed to beat Sugar Ray by about four points.
Leonard-Hagler, as it is quite possibly the most evenly debated boxing controversy ever. I get the feeling that if you took a poll among 100 hardcore boxing fans on whom they thought won, you would get something like 46-46 and 8 draws.
the fights were connected Ray learned against Duran to have advantages before the fight as well as in the ring.. And he really used this against Hagler in the contract for the fight.
Ray outclassed him the two fights after. Ray knew this was an easy fight for him everytime out after the second fight.. Duran could never beat him again.. One of Ray's easiest wins against an elite.
I think it's fair to take into account that Duran hade more dominant rds against Leonard than Leonard had against Hagler. Scoring it round by round Montreal could have gone to Leonard just as Hagler could have gotten the nod, but over the fights overall Duran was the more dominant during his best rounds of the fight. Whatever you think that's worth.
True, true. I'm just going by my own thoughts at the time, i had the winner by about two points in each. Also in neither fight would i have overly been able to give the loser more points. But yes Duran had some clearer rounds, absolutely.
Duran won clearly. Hagler won clearly. I think Hagler would have quit in a rematch though, like Duran did.
I'm planning to rewatch it soon but the last time I scored it a few years ago, I thought that it could have gone either way. Though Duran won his rounds more emphatically, I thought that Leonard edged him in plenty of rounds with cleaner, sharper punching. I think that Duran gets a little too much credit for mauling and roughing Leonard up, even in rounds when he didn't seem to be landing many clean punches. I need to rescore it though. On the other hand, I thought that Leonard-Hagler was a narrow but absolutely clear victory for Leonard. Even though I like Hagler more than I like Leonard, I don't see any way to give Hagler more rounds than Leonard. I've scored that one multiple times and reached the same conclusion. It's near the top of my "famous robberies that weren't even close to being robberies" list.
