I wasn't born at the time.... But I'm curious to know Did you pick Davey to beat Duran? Did you think Duran had a chance going into the fight? What were you shocked by the ending result? Your Thoughts
I was around when that fight happen All the media picked Moore Saw Duran training for that fight he looked hungry.Herd on one of the sports cast on the radio (no internet cell phones cable tv back in those days) Duran won by ko
Moore was way too easy to hit and loved to trade. He was a guy not staying as champ very long. That was the kind of opponent that suits Duran best at those higher weights.
Like the rest of the world i thought Duran was past it and his win over an also past it Pipino Cuevas didn't convince me of other. Everyone knew Moore was open and very raw but he also had a ton of heart and punched extremely well.
I only saw that fight way after it had happened and I knew the result. It's impressive the way Duran demolished him, because Moore was actually imho a very good fighter. Locally there was a fighter called Charlie Weir, who had devastated everybody he came across, and it was expected that he'd beat the crap out of Moore too. Instead Davey carpet bombed him and made it look easy. It wasn't unreasonable to expect Moore to beat an old Duran.
it was a good win but it was not an elite win.. Duran fans point to this fight and the Barkley and say it proves Duran's greatness. But sandwiched between the Moore fight are two greats beating Duran easily at this same weight. And Barkley? Duran had another guy open to be hit and I knew Duran would win this fight..
Pretty impressive a pass his prime Lightweight moving up in weight beating Two young strong fighters. One of those fighters beat Hearns twice. It was Durans 3 third world title many would call that an elite win.(when winning 3 title really ment something .How many lightweights have won a middle weight title ?)
Duran turned 32 years old on the day of the Moore fight, Moore had recently turned 24. Duran was 76-4, Moore was 12-0. Duran was much more experienced, Moore was bigger and stronger. Looking back now, it would seem that Moore had been "rushed" in his career and probably should have had more fights before fighting a former champion with that much experience. Of course Moore had a version of the title at the time so he had to face his challengers...
Moore for me wasn't an elite win but considering his size and both their career stages it was one mighty fine one.
I recall watching Duran beat Cuevas and saw he was fighting again with a nastiness that wasn't present after Montreal. I remember some of his corner people saying Duran was inspired and would kill Moore. I wasn't sold till after the first round.
Most thought Moore would beat Duran. I thought so also as Duran appeared at the end of a long career while Moore was an up and coming excellent fighter. This was one of Durans best technical performances.
