Ill be asking this in my 'random thoughts' thread too but wanted to ask them here.... - Rigo vs Loma, now official. yeeaaa..... so question, when was the last fight, in your opinion, that combined this much talent and skill in one matchup. Had May and Pac fought in 2008 I would list that, seeing as they fought when both were declined, I honestly rate this matchup as better in terms of combined forms/talent/skillsets at the time of the actual match. - which also makes me wonder what are your personal best matchups (not actual fight itself) but pure matchups, in the last 20 years or so. Just curious
- Been thinking a lot about the Canelo G fight.... you know, on the surface this is a hard fight to call for me. Canelo has a certain set of circumstances and momentum that I rarely pick against, especially if the opponent is a 35 year old with one eye on retirement already. On top of that, I really think Canelos speed and dynamic upper body movement could pose some problems. On top of that, the Jacobs fight has me questioning just how much fire Golovkin is actually willing to walk through for victory when his opponent actually punches hard and has the skills and speed to land buzzing shots, which could be a determining factor in this fight. Now, on top of that, throw in that you already know if the fight is close, and it goes the distance, you have to favor Canelo to get the benefit of the doubt from the judges. If Golovkin does not score a knockdown, he can not let this go to a decision. So, that all being said..... I absolutely can see why anyone would be going with Canelo. In fact, Im kinda suprised, when you hear the other boxing pros, coaches, boxingheads, 'experts', ect, talk about this matchup, many many many, if not the slight majority, are indeed picking Canelo. So again, I am kinda suprised hes not the slight favorite with the bookies. Which brings me to my pick.... I do think Golovkins jab, length, and pressure, are going to give Canelo problems, in the first two rounds I think Canelo does well with his speed advantage and timing ability, landing some good counters that make the crowd go wild and gets G to nod his head in acknowledgement, Golovkin continues to stalk in rounds 3 and 4, Canelo holding his own but starting to slowly give up momentum.... G's right hand starting to make an impact in the fight. G starts taking control after 5, Canelo getting a bit confused on how to deal with the jab, starting to feel the pressure, and this slowly accumulates until Golovkin stops him in the championship rounds, Ill say the 11th, with the corner throwing in the towel.... Golovkin TKO11 Obviously, the chances that this is how the fight actually plays out is small, but the point is that overall, I think G will stop Canelo late. But again, by no means do I put it past Canelo to win. Hes got certain contexts in this fight I rarely rarely pick against. Golovkin TKO 11
All I hope is that the Canelo G fight lives up to the hype. No matter what happens.... I just want the fight to satisfy, and that the headlines are positive the next day and that it brings respect and momentum to the sport.
Can't remember the last boxing fight I was so psyched for. Been giving it a lot of thought over the last few days and I am stumped for an answer. I don't wanna be going all out saying it's the most excited I've ever been, but I can't think of a fight I've been more excited for. I don't even care if it's boring, I just don't want it to be controversial. Boxing has seen so much better matchmaking this year. Not quite UFC level but a huge step up from last year.
