Going to have to disagree there. Canelo's inactivity is the reason Golovkin's work is being highlighted. His defense was great but he was still getting caught with flush jabs for long periods of time without doing much in return. So what, he slips a few jabs, he still took a few, and was unable to land any in return. Golovkin's defense was actually pretty tight as well.
Off top of my head I gave Canelo rounds 1,2 10,12 But want to rewatch it. I thought Triple G bossed him in the middle of the fight hunting him down for 5-6 consecutive rounds. Maybe I can find another round to give Canelo but to me- absolutely no way he won and I think a draw is a reach too although I have seen worse. That Byrd score though - awful - legendarily awful
Canelo would put in work for the first and last 30 seconds of the round, then go defensive for the in between part. He did this a lot in the second half of the fight (which I gave the majority of the rds to Golovkin). He slipped more than a few jabs, he made Golovkin miss a ton of right hands among other punches. I don't reward ineffective pressure. Golovkin doesn't get to win rds just for showing up and opponents don't win rds just for surviving either. Golovkin did have pretty good defense too but Canelo was the one making Golovkin miss big punches. Canelo looked much more accurate consistently.
That he did, I was just generalizing what the bulk of the fight consisted of: Canelo not having an answer to Golovkin's jab. I didn't use even rounds for this fight. I gave Canelo 1, 2, 11, and 12. If there was even rounds, I think Golovkin would still have an edge as his rounds were clearer. Not sure about that, Canelo also missed his fair share of big punches wide. Canelo looked more accurate because Golovkin used a guard and Canelo used more movement.
I agree, Golovkin's jab was really good. I didn't use even rds either, I thought every rd was close but slightly one way or the other imo. Yes, Canelo did miss his fair of big punches. I agree there absolutely. Very good assessment of the defense utilized, that's how I see it too. I call it a draw but it's a draw I could see edged closer to Golovkin than Canelo.
I don't see a strong argument for a Canelo win. Both men neutralized each other's heavy artillery but Golovkin's jab was a steady weapon that controlled the fight. I think a draw is a more accurate assessment than anyone scoring the fight to Canelo, but I think it was a competitive Golovkin win. I believe 8-4 or 7-5 is the best reflection of how it went down.
I've not been watching boxing for a long time, so, here goes. I had Alvarez winning rounds 1, 2, 11, 12 and Golovkin winning 4, 6, 7, 8. Rounds 3, 5, 9, 10 were close but I'd say Golovkin deserves 5 and 9 more. So, I'm OK with a draw but would have been happier with Golovkin by 2. My 2p.
And one was officially even. Canelo only out landed him in round 2, a feeling out round. Look at this jab. It's beautiful. People keep arguing he was just jabbing..okay, but that's a great jab. Nelo landed the bigger shots in round one but GGG landed more and at a higher connect percentage. I gave the 1st to GGG. He controlled the first round where Nelo was kind of coasting in a feeling out process. The jab of GGG dictated the opening stanza. Nelo won the next 2 rounds but began losing rounds from 4 to 9. He just was fighting Golovkin's fight the entire night. He had spots he did really good work but it was few and far between. Out of 36 minutes of fighting, Nelo may have won 12 minutes with his offensive output. He was 75% defensive and fighting to keep Golovkin at bay which he didn't have much success
You gave GGG the first round because he threw and landed slightly more jabs? Lol Please, watch round 1 again. I gave a breakdown of the punches landed. All GGG did in rd one was stalk and flick out a weak jab, not even his usual strong jab.
They both landed good jabs throughout the fight, but a lot of GGGs jabs were feelers or distance jabs. In round one the only solid jab he lands is in between 2 of Canelo's power punches and simultaneously Canelo lands his owm strong jab. Watch rd one and more specifically from 1:18 to see what Im saying is true.
Of course.. you score based on clean effective punching and who controls each round. When a fighter lands one or two big shots but for 2:30 is being peppered with jabs and right hands moving away, you score accordingly. None of GGG's jabs are weak. Nelo's head snapped back a few times in the opening round eating the jab. Alvarez landed a good shot on GGG upstairs and a couple of good body shots but outside of that, he was getting tagged and walked down. He was reactive and GGG was proactive. I watched the fight with my son this morning. GGG definitely took the 1st round. He landed 15 punches to Nelo's 10. Only 3 punches were power shots that Nelo managed to land.
