Where does Hughie go now?

When you get dull fights like this with two styles that don't gell and very few punches are landed is very difficult to score, so it goes down to personal preference and mine is to side with the guy applying the pressure and making his opponent stay on the back foot, of course you can win fights on the back foot but if the rounds are close and very few convincing shots are being landed then the nod should go to the guy forcing the issue. I can see how this fight was scored 118-110, it was much more clear cut than Canelo GGG last week.

 

I’m clearly not going to come out on top in this debate, haha.

 

The compubox numbers that were posted back up my initial thought that Hughies jab was hardly landing and was ineffective. I didn't know what people were watching when they said Hughies jab was good.

 

Yeah it's nowhere near Tyson's. Tyson actually sometimes backhands his jab but look what he did to Chisora's face almost entirely with his jab.

Fact is, when the Furys pulled out of the NZ fight and got it moved to the UK, they thought they had it in the bag. Therein lies their frustration.

It never occured to them that Hughie actually had to still go out and fight to win it. I mean, he actually stepped into the ring on the scheduled date for a change, what more could anyone ask?

 

I dont really get the chat about the fureys having this big gameplan about winning the fight running cause they knew they,d have it in the bag cause in britain. Hueys always fights like that. He exchanged less only because parker kind of forced him to exchange less. Cause he was a lot more dangerous than the other fury opponents.

I agree with twenty...huey would be stupid to take parker on head on. Kept to his strengths. He maybe just didnt have the experience to know when to back parker up and when to box on the back foot. As far as i m concerned that fights the best learning fight he could have had. Hes not that far away from being a big player in that heavyweight division when you look at the landscape. The tools are their... just needs a bit more time to develop and gain experience.

Their needing to move on now and work on them improvements. Try to keep huey busy.

 

Thought exactly the same, the jab was not landing at all. The whole fury team are deluded in their assessment of the fight.

 

Also think huey with a sleight change in style can become an entertaining fighter to watch. Just needs to learn when to mix it up. Cant help feeling he needs to bulk up that frame of his a bit

 

I had exactly the same thought. The jab (or flick) rarely went further than Parker's guard, if that.

I agree great learning fight and this will only improve him
But I am told this ain't about learning at this level this is what his whole career as was built up to towards
But I agree he Weill come back from this a more complete fighter
The o in boxing is looked upon as this well I don't know but it hinders fighters development IMO compared to the fighters from back in the day

 

You nailed it about the zero mate. I mentioned at Xmas reading Johnny Nelson’s book...he won the WBO Cruiserweight title with a record of 32-12-1. Groves is a far better fighter from his humblings against Froch & Jack. There are so many examples. Personally, although I greatly admire the likes of Ward, Mayweather, GGG etc i’m more inspired by the fighters that came back from defeats and career adversities.

 

fury is fabulous and his fight with parker was very intelligent.

 

Hughie was well beaten vs Parker.

I have no idea who past the fans who were listening to the jingoistic British commentary even thought Hughie was in that fight.

I scored it 118-110 to Parker...And Still....

Where does Hughie go from there?
If he continues to fight like that, and to punch like that, then nowhere!

He needs to work on his jab, work in his offence and work on his power.
His defence is excellent but that means nothing without an offence of your own!
