Great doc and sad story. 90's was the best period in heavyweight boxing. Peak Tommy would still be top-10.
Seriously, Those final shots in both knockouts could kill someone, those are career and life changers.
Yeah, good points. Who knows. He was fun to watch, and a great fighter. Damn, Heavyweight was so much better and more interesting and entertaining back then!
Great documentary on the rise and tragic fall of a promising HW talent. One of the main themes of Morrison's life was that he just had zero impulse control. Everything had to be done in excess even if it resulted in self-sabotaging his career and life. There's a saying that a man born round doesn't die square, with his lifestyle he was never going to be someone who would live to a ripe old age. One of the interesting things in the doc was before his tested positive for HIV to start his deal with DK he was refusing to get a blood test and had to be coaxed into it by his manager, he also had a conversation with his mother before about HIV. I suspect he might've known he had the disease for some time but wanted to keep a tight lid on it.
Good bit of info there. Although that fight can't really be blamed much on the ref. Except if you think the ref should've been monitoring the liquids in the corner (not sure who's responsibility that is), but who the hell was supposed to be checking the wraps and the gloves?? Btw, somebody should put a bullet in Panama's head for that.
maybe not the best heavyweight in the 90s, he was never beating any the four main men, ever, but he has to be up there and one of the most exciting fighters of the 90s, which is something to say. he made some strange choices though and its left a bit of a stain on his reputation that he might have known about the HIV. It is sad to see his transformation when watching the later interviews of his. I can see a decent film being made of his life, there's a hell of a lot of story there.
IDK ,this era has some really good ones too..dont forget those guys also didnt fight each other until they were all really past their best...at least guys today aren't really doing that and most top guys are still not even in their prime yet including wilder who probably is still a few fights away from that. ..and thats bc the modern media is on top of them, everyone wants the best fights now so fights are getting done sooner .
Just watched this. What a depressing and painful story and life he lived. This guy was insanely self destructive, all the way to the end. One sad thing is how young and unaware he was when he was catapulted into the spotlight. Hearing his promoter talk about how reckless he was, and all the partying he did......he was only like 23yrs old (or early 20's)!! Most 23 year olds I know, still live at home nowadays. Seeing what he looked like when he was only 42 years old was shocking! I know it was the HIV and Aids that deteriorated him (even though he wouldn't admit it), but the guy looked like he was over 60yrs old, when he was 40. Definitely NOT a feel good story. But nicely done by ESPN as always.
It was kind of a hatchet job on Morrison to be honest. And cute the way they were sure to throw in the steroid stuff with Morrison. Lol Like he was the only top heavyweight in the 90's on them. GTFO And Mercer with the "He hit me harder than anyone else" to make his victory look better I'd wager Wlad cracked his ugly skull harder. Especially with that lead left hook in the first round that dropped Ray like a sack of potatoes. Mercer before the Wlad fight: "He's (Wlad) just a Russian Tommy Morrison. It will be the same thing." WHAT HAPPENED DOE?! Anybody remember that? I do
