Lennox Lewis shouldn'tget credit for the McCall rematch

    Not a lucky punch at all. McCall didnt reach out and hit Lewis.....he timed him coming in! That wasnt a punch thrown at an opponent from the outside. He knew Lewis was going to step in range!

    I saw the fight lewis desetve credit not his fault mccall didnt take his meds

    He should get credit but McCall is not exactly an impressive name on his resume. Bruno had already battered him the year before. McCall looked on the brink of breaking down in other fights too. McCall was a good underdog, a tough gym fighter. I think he had weakness mentally always, couldn't handle the pressure of being at the top. He was better off being a braggart sparring partner.

    And yet he was a World Champion and easily destroyed Lewis.

    And the Bruno fight was competitive. Frank didnt really batter him.

    It's not Lennox's fault that the WBC sanctioned the rematch between him and McCall for their vacant title. Lennox did what he had to do, and definitely deserves credit for such. I'm sure he'd ideally have preferred to face Mike Tyson for the title.

    I agree that Lewis had little choice but to take the fight.

    He had lost his title, and this fight was his way back from the wilderness.

    His status with the WBC was the only major card that he held at the time.

    Yep! And Lewis had some bad luck around this time. He wanted the Tyson fight before this. Tyson went a different route, and Lewis ultimately agreed to accept the step aside money, and as a part of that deal, he was supposed to face Riddick Bowe. All that was needed was for Lewis to beat Mercer and for Bowe to beat Golota. That of course fell apart because of the Golota-Bowe saga. And then he was forced to face McCall in a rematch if he wanted a title shot, after losing would-be potential big fight opportunities with Tyson and Bowe.

    So to be critical of Lennox Lewis for the McCall rematch is beyond the realm of reason.

    i had this fight taped. i gave it to my wife to show to her class while in school for occupational therapy training, during the mental health segment. the teacher and class could not believe the level of melt down that mccall had.
    agree to a point with the thread poster. if there were indications of mccall's mental state during training camp, his handlers should have come forward and delayed the fight. we know that fighters would kill themselves in the ring if so inclined. that might have been what was happening with mccall. he was saying to the ref, "i need to fight!"

    Lewis isn't at fault. I don't think the point of the thread is to heap criticism on Lewis. It is to decide if he deserves full credit for the rematch. Tyson had to go through Holmes to consolidate his hold of the heavyweight division, but no one claims he beat the best version of Holmes. This falls in a similar category.

    I would favor Lennox over Oliver in a best for best scenario, but their actual rematch does nothing to inform that conclusion.

    It absolutely informs on the probability that Oliver would have the professionalism to show up ready to perform. I guarantee you that Vegas oddsmakers would take that into consideration.

    In this life you only get so many times to shine. McCall had one of those few times and chose to waste his preparation in a crackhouse.
