There's certainly a case for awarding this acolade to Lewis.

Randy turpin from what i've seen on film. from what i've read , jack broughton. Fought for over 40 years ( in the 1700's ) and paved the way for modern ring rules and the boxing glove.

Ricky Hatton may not be the greatest but he certainly was the most English.

Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar, was he African?

Lennox Lewis - "I'm giving all my support to the British soccer team in the World Cup."

    That qualifies enough for me.

I don't know why you two are arguing about Lennox Lewis, I'm sure the conversation started with comments about Ted Kid Lewis !

I'd put him behind Lewis but he deserves the mention.

There's a contentious issue whether the Cornwall and the Cornish people are "English" though. Many of them are traditionally proud NOT to be English.

I've just stated my criteria, no Englishman would mistake the English football team for the British soccer team.

The Cornish people are/were seperate ethnic group, like the Welsh. A Celtic culture rather than Anglo-Saxon. There's a Cornish language. There are Cornish nationalists who favour some form of political devolution or independence. They certainly don't consider themselves English, though many inhabitants of the region nowadays might.
