Did Floyd's ppv model ruin US boxing?

They give the moonman award to the best actor

 

I'm surprised the PPV model is still alive at all in this day and age.

Outdated doesn't begin to describe it. Archaic is a better word for it!

I'd have no problem if the cards were stacked like they were in the 90's where you got the British fights and THEN the American fights straight after. But we don't.

Now we have to pay through the nose for a pointless and manufactured domestic fight (key word is 'domestic') or a MANDATORY fight!

 

How is Boxing hurting when MMAs biggest benefactor wants to become a boxing promoter(Dana White)?

If people were only ordering Mayweather PPVs and they real mad at the other 1000 boxers then **** them.
Those are not boxing fans if they only know 1 man and judge the whole sport on his actions, what ever that might be to them.
So Mayweather ruined nothing. Peoples attention span ruined entertainment period.

 

Not entirely. Promoters like Don King had a ton to do with it. Casual fans had expectations of slug fests, not technical defensive boxing. Also, everyone has tried to copy Floyd's model of fighting the easiest opponent for the most money, not necessarily the hardest opponent. Some did in hopes of getting a Floyd fight.

As others said, the under cards weren't as good, prices went up, many super fights turned out to be duds, and the model itself is outdated.

 

I don't understand why US can't like, make PPV fights. Like Thurman vs Garcia would sell pretty damn good if they did it for something reasonable like $20. How much was the Ward vs Kovalev fights? $60 ish? No wonder it sold like crap.

 

I believe PPV has been the main culprit of boxing escaping from the public eye in the US. With 1M PPV buys making it a success in most cases, it means that -taking multiple viewers per buy into account- they might be lucky if 1% of the population actually saw the fight. Not really a great way to enhance the sports' popularity.
Then we got Floyd who turned PPV even into something worse. Jacking up the prices for mismatches that were dull to watch, while constantly promising "the next fight" would be against who the public wanted him to see.

But of course it's not the only thing that estranged the US audience from boxing.
The free to watch boxing matches did their job almost just as fine, with either mismatches between up and comers and pushovers, or decent fights in which the home/featured fighter always wins regardless of how the fight went against the guy with the spotty record and/or hard to pronounce name.
ESPN's Friday Night Fights had their robberies at least every other week, and sometimes multiple per night. Now the PBC has taken over and they finetuned that to a tee.

 

No, you guys are obviously brand new fans.
Ppv was long before we had Mr money man, but might a well blame fighter you hate and one of the few americans who tried to bring us, USA, huge events.

PPV is ok to have, but boxing has skipped what it had years ago to set up the big boxing fights. Back in the 1970s and early 1980s. the top guys Hagler,Hearns,Leonard and Duran and Benitez fought on regular TV.. And then there was a natural move to HBO and PPV or closed circuit. Today guys are barely known and are in PPV.. So people feel ripped off that they are just not ready or known.

 

Why is the Price so Expensive though,Sky in the UK know if they ever pull a trick like that,they will be in the ****.How comes HBO and Showtime can charge that amount for a PPV.Ward-Kovalev nearly 60 dollars,for a fight that had no Promotion,overwhelmed by the announcement of Mayweather Mcgregor,two bland personalties and styles and it done poor numbers in the 1st Fight.PpV Again,that is what i call Ripping The public off.

 

I dont have a problem with PPV. I have a problem with $89.99 for PPV. Its fuc*ing bulls*it. It'll be $99.99 pretty soon. Smh.
