Was just watching "The Best of Enemies" show which ITV screened just before the fight. In it, Jonathan Ross says Benn was going to earn £1m and Eubank £850k. How come Benn was getting more money? Surely by this stage, Eubank was the bigger deal here, he was making more TV appearances, he was better known to the wider public partly because of the Watson fight, he'd already beaten Benn, he was the unbeaten guy, okay he may have been the guy that people love to hate, but that draws people in. Also, can a British fight ever draw the public's imagination like this fight did ever again? About 4min20sec Ross mentions the money This content is protected
At present an undefeated Tyson Fury against an undefeated unified world champion Anthony Joshua would totally eclipse Eubank-Benn in terms of capturing the public's imagination. It would be so damn big.
Yeah, God damn right! Definitely be a bigger fight worldwide, but Eubank-Benn was huge in Britain, everyone was talking about, I mean just look at the audience, packed full of stars from Eastenders and page 3.
Benn and Eubank was a match made in heaven. It's like they were boxing soul mates. Not sure if fury aj will have same chemistry. If fury can come back win a few and aj few more as well. One of them taking out wilder it would be huge and fun
Fury can sell any fight. The trouble is though the wider public don't go on to youtube to watch iFL interviews.
Another interesting thing is Henry Cooper at about 9mins in says "in the olden days these grudges were a bit tongue in cheek, bad things were said with a twinkle in your eye, but nowadays a lot of fighters seem to mean it, and that's the difference, a little bit of fun has gone out the game, it's all deadly serious now". Then Benn can be seen smiling and shaking his head, as if to say "no, nothing has changed, it's not real, we're just selling a fight Henry". Thoughts? Was this grudge real?
I was 15 when this was on, have still got this program and the fight on VHS! This was huge though, prime time on ITV on a Saturday night. Not many people had sky so it really was massive. Fury v Joshua wouldn't be as big as this, not sure any fight could be these days. I was so excited for this fight, it was eubank that really got me into boxing. I know he's a bit of a nob but he was great. Their grudge is a bit odd, think it grew into a love / hate relationship for Nigel, he seemed to switch between the two over the years. Eubank always seemed a bit aloof and didn't really engage emotionally like Benn. Watching this you can see why it is always used as the benchmark for British rivalries, that excitement comes back just seeing them together!
I know... I think it was part of the negotiations leading up to the re-match, i remember Eubank telling gary newbon to set him "Free" and pay him 1.7mil to make the fight happen, and if they did not he will sleep quite comfortably knowing his name stands above benns. It was also the same interview where Eubank said i don't have to do anything except stay black and pass away.. Hilarious stuff!
Was it bollkcs it was just the usual geeing the public up to sell it, and get them to buy into it and the hype, sadly i was one of them, not anymore though. Eubank demanding a mil on tv and stating basically if you don't it doesn't happen... Again i was one of them who was hooked, and wanted to see the fight at any cost, and again not any more. Not long after PPv slowly came in, you would look forward to say a Tyson fight, then whilst watching you were hammered with a message from Paul Dempsey, this channel will be encrypted, to see the fight please pay basically... So no the grudge was a screen to get money out of you... PPVs and the like have ruined boxing all over the world... Bring back the days of Don Dumphy i say...
Was a great era for boxing, all these great fights on free television. Sky Sports had already started rearing its head by this stage, but at least they showed some great fights like Lewis-Bruno and Bowe-Holyfield. Can you imagine fights of this calibre NOT being PPV today?
