p4p lists are good. The only problem is the criteria people use, often too much emphasis is placed on what a fighter did 5 years ago and important aspects such as skillset, manner of victories and h2h comparisons are ignored. Thus we end up with Winky-Wright and Hatton inexplicably in the top 10.

Bit unfair isn't it surely? Yes when he flurries he does punch incorrectly at times but you don't have his record without being an elite fighter and he deserves his spot in the rankings.

I dont remember fights like the Byron Mitchell one being unexciting either. They don't get much more exciting than those 2 rounds.

Cotto should deffo be in the top 5 at least though.

Cotto could be as high as 4, he's either above or below Vasquez. A case can be made for either.

The problem is theres no general agreement on how to rank the fighters. Achievments? H2H if they were the same size? If so what size? Current form?

You can rip apart the monthly P4P rankings in 2 seconds.....

Its just an individual opinion and interesting discussion point. It would be even more pointless if we all agreed exactly how to rank them, and came up with the exact same lists

The better posters on this site come up similar looking top 10's anyway, by any criteria - because its not that difficult to do. It's 10 onwards where things start to get hazey.

Exactly. As I said, just "a bit of fun for boxing fans".

Look at the Rings P4P, what criteria can rank Hopkins AND Pavlik? Hopkins has achievements but has lost 3 out of his last 4 and Pavlik has form but has only beaten 2 world class fighters.

Hatton was #3 (deserved or not), loses to the #1 and now isn't in the top 10? Would that happen if it wasn't P4P? I'd say not, so whats the difference? Surely the criteria that got Hatton to number 3 must still count for something even if he loses to the number 1? Hopkins lost to the number 3 and is still number 6.

If people want to kill time compiling and debating these lists then fair enough but I don't give them any credibility whatsoever and it certainly doesn't take "better posters" to come up with them.

    Rant over...

You've just pointed out the exact flaws I was talking about in some peoples lists, whereby they place too much emphasis on a certain criteria. Hopkins, Pavlik nor Hatton should have ever been in any top 10

Pavlik has only beat one decent guy, and hasn't shown any great p4p skills. Hopkins skews peoples logic based on what he did 10 years ago. He has the best case though, as the Tarver win was impressive and he still fairs well h2h against anybody around his weight. Hatton hasn't done anything worthy of being top 10 since he beat Tszyu, which is a fading memory now, and he also appears to be declining. Winky-Wright was another in the Hopkins category of living off past glories.

But hey, thats just my opinion

Hatton probably didn't deserve the high ranking he had prior to the Mayweather fight but having been given that ranking losing, to the number 1 shouldn't drop him out of the top 10.

Hopkins was impressive performance was, as you say, Tarver (no, I don't count the WW fight) he really shouldn't be in any list that also has Pavlik, Mijares etc. in it.

Even if Floyd retires Joe is at number 3 for me (which is still very high and he should be very pleased with himself) but I don't think we should remove Floyd just yet. Remember when BHop retired after he beat Tarver? The Ring didn't take him out of the rankings straight away because they wanted to see if he was actually retiring.

We should probably wait until Pacquaio & Calzaghe fight their next opponents and judge based on the performance, caliber of opponent and importance to the sport.

Me personally have a hard time believing that both JC and Pac are the 2 top fighters at this moment in time. Both have acheived great things in their careers, but both are also on the slide.

If you take a guy like Cotto who is at his peak or even maybe better to come. He hasn't had that career defining fight yet (maybe the Marg fight will be it),but on current form it can be argued that he deserves to be right on top P4P.

Another thing about these lists is that they always favour the heavier guys. There are wonderful fighters who are featherweight or below like Mijares and Valuques who don't get a lookin, which really neglates the whole question of who is better pound for pound.

Calzaghe doesn't even know who his next opponent is yet people are making him p4p number one?:rofl

I'm with Gaz here, sort of, surely we should wait & see what happens next before we jump to any ESB, child like conclusions.

I really really couldn't put Cotto top when his best win was a tightish decision over Mosley, who is years past his best.

I like Cotto and his opposition has been decent (and improving after a rebuild period post Torres) but he has still to face genuine top notch opposition.

His next fight meets that criteria though, decent job against Margy and nobody can dispute who is the man at Welter. And I'd say that even if Floyd is still active.

But for now, I'd go with Joe. He meets my criteria. Multiple weight champ and nobody in sight who can beat him across 2 divisions. Not that p4p means anything anyway, really...
