The first three are pretty much always the same, Max Schmeling, Floyd Patterson and Roberto Duran. Then it's changing a lot, currently Naseem Hamed (damn that pr*ck was entertaining) and Vasyl Lomachenko.
In no order probably; Norton, Hagler, Frazier, Louis & Marciano. Then in the next band; Charles, Moore, JJW, Arguello, Conteh, Moore, SRR, Burley, Sibson... I've probably forgotten loads...
2 or 3 are always in there, the rest vary, but really I like most pugs even the arseholes! Top 5 for now: Ali Patterson Louis Tyson Conteh
In no particular order, and with a touch of British bias: Nigel Benn Carl Froch Mike Tyson Marvin Hagler Naseem Hamed Very closely followed by Muhamed Ali,Lennox Lewis, Julio Cesar Chavez Snr, Thomas Hearns, Roy Jones Jnr. and Joe Calzaghe. Could go on a lot longer for fighters I've enjoyed watching and could change that list from one day to the next. Just love the sport......
My God @jowcol ...I mean, we must have been separated at birth! I can just use your list....just tweak it a bit of course, ....and BTW, ain't no way (forgive my "English") I can hold it to just 5,...or even 10 for that matter, so here goes: Floyd Patterson - My personal boxing hero as well...and not just of boxing. Floyd was and always has been a role model of mine. A "man's man" if there ever was one. Jimmy Young - Another personal boxing hero...the guy who should have been champion...because he beat Ali...and Ken Norton. Sugar Ray Robinson - Again, the greatest of all time P4P, Oz 4 Oz, or however way you want to slice it. Carlos Monzon - The greatest middleweight champion of all time, and the coolest of all champions, both literally as well as figuratively.....the Clint Eastwood of Boxing. Emile Griffith - Probably the most consistantly underrated great champion of all. Jose Napoles - Short of SRR, probably the classiest, smoothest and greatest of all the champions of boxing. Ken Buchanan - The Great Scot. Rodrigo Valdez - If not for Monzon, it would be Valdez who we would all be talking about today in terms of greatness. Eddie Mustafa Muhammad - Then great unfulfilled genius of boxing...the great "woulda/coulda/shoulda been" of boxing. Dempsey/Tunney - Can't separate the two. Joe Louis - Of course. Willie Pastrano - Another great unfulfilled talent of boxing. Harold Johnson - The Great Technical Master. Joey Giardello - The Great Self-taught Master Wizard of boxing...and the conqueror of Hurricane Carter in real life. Tommy Loughran/Joey Archer - The two great purist master boxers. Nicolino Locche - My great guilty pleasure. Wilfredo Gomez - Because Wilfred Benitez - Because Now let's see,....hmmm....who did I leave out? To be continued....
Rocky turned pro at age 16 in 1962. He 'languished' in SA for 7-8 years before heading north to America. Same with King Carlos. Was a virtual unknown until he dismantled Benvenutti.
Hey Red! Yeah, I left out a few: Harold Johnson, Dempsey, Willie Pastrano (greatest sports quote in history: early in his career he was decked early in MSG and 30 seconds later tasted another big bomb which dumped him! The ref checked his gloves and asked him if he knew where he was, standard procedure. Willie's response: "Hell yes I know where I'm at, I'm in the middle of Madison Square Garden gettin' the s h I t kicked out of me!) Tiger, Young, Armstrong, Greb, Dempsey, most of the 40's thru early sixties welters-middles, Burley, Holman, Mims etc. Back to job hunting but...I'll take a break and watch William Wyler's 1936 "Dodsworth", IMO The Greatest director of all time! (check out his resume!) Wife shopping and at movie with friends. Gosh I miss the old movies and those TV fights as a child! Have a blessed Xmas Red and to everyone!
What a very hard list to make up... Right now I'm feeling: 1. Muhammad Ali (obviously) 2. Roberto Duran (could easily be no 1) 3. Sugar Ray Robinson (again easily no 1) 4. Tommy Hearns (fascinating to watch) 5. Juan Manuel Marquez (loved him)
