You are not going to learn boxing from a boxing forum, if you have trust in the boxing club/trainer then put yourself in their hands, listen, absorb their wisdom and put it into practice.

Now you know why rabbit punches are banned in boxing, it rattles the brain.

Giving up your jaw or indeed your ribs will not protect your brain, jaw punches most definitely connect with the brain, and rib punches will in the end make you drop your guard making punches to jaw/head likely.

Boxing = the art of hitting without being hit, the only thing you want your opponent to be hitting is either the deck or thin air.

Be humble and learn from your trainer, forget your street fighting exploits, your ability to box within the Marquess of Queensberry rules should now be your focus.

    Good luck in your training.

You sound as though you are static stiff almost you need to loosen up ever thought of yoga ? Stretches **** like that but again balance is a main key factor
And as for reflexes keep them as sharp as possible as they natural go with age
Hope you have youth on your side

I am 21 people, and no i am not arrogant about my prior street experience or punching power. But when i walked to the gym the first thing i told them was"i want to win a gold olympic mental"i thought that they would laugh but they took me seriously after they saw me hitting the heavy bag with those fat gloves.I also work out 3 hours per day 4 days now i really love the sport. But i don't want brain damages not to me but not for my oppoments as well.Ashishwarrior,i have flexibility i know it sounds weird but i have enough flexibility in my legs to reach my shoulder in a kick or even more and i squat 100kg 2 reps (it's not much but i am not a bb)but still my footwork suckssssss,my legs can't get off the ground. They just can't.

That sounds like a very rational point of view.I can understand your mindset, certainly intellect and intelligence are what makes a person truly human i will not argue. But is that real success?Do you really enjoy having a crappy ass boss above you?I don't.I don't like a peaceful life. All or nothing. It's not about the money the cars the interviews the promotions the belts. It's a fire,i don't have a better word to describe it.Also you are right brain isn't made for taking super mike tyson shots or having mc gregor kicking it,but you know what?It worths the trouble. When i see all those world champions expressions after they win a belt i feel like"i must chase this"i want to experience this feeling".Still i am not saying that it's good to take super shots that shake the brain.I am saying that it worths it.

This. Boxing is a very tough sport to be good at. Even with years of practice and talent the only way to get good is to be willing to risk taking some lumps from time to time. Even George Foreman said that all fighters should plan for some permanent memory loss and brain damage, but also said fighters should do their best to keep it at a minimum. But, despite all of that boxing is a great skill for anybody to have whether they compete or just use it for recreation.

When you jab, do not allow your non-jabbing hand to drop out of position.

Besides that, very much what miniq posted.

First of all, your footwork doesn't suck - you simply don't have footwork. This is normal after four days of training. You know nothing - this is a good thing. It means you can learn everything properly and get really good.

Be patient with yourself and focus on the small details of movements at first.

It is too early to be sparring, and way too early to worry about brain damage.

My only advice is to forget about your power and work on great technique, be it footwork or otherwise. Your power will initially suffer but then start to come back, and generally would be even more than before.

When you train have your mouthpiece aka gumshield in. Also you may want to use an appropriately sized sponge or rolled up towel by tucking it between your chin and collarbone. The idea behind that is to get you in the habit of tucking your chin.

Also line jumping will help your footwork quite a bit.

    Line Jumping

Find something that can serve as a line painted on a level surface. An empty parking lot is usually good for this.

Do not straddle the line but stand beside the line with your toes pointed along the length of the line.

Keep your foot right next to the line on the ground. Lift the other one.

Standing on one foot make a tiny hop to the other side of the line landing on the same foot you just used to make your jump.

Now jump to the other side of the line--the side you started from, going a small distance forward.

Repeat this staying on the same front throughout and keeping the same foot off the ground throughout.

Go the distance of the line forward then do the same thing moving backwards---your face remains looking the same direction throughout.

Once your done change the side of the line you start on and use the other foot to jump and land keeping the other foot off the ground throughout this time.

*improves balance, coordination, footwork and also a bit of an aerobic workout too.

Concentrate on shifting your weight as your fist makes contact with the target, moving your head right to left or left to right not so much forward-backward. Start the punch by turning your heel outward. If you're throwing a straight right, turn your right heel out as your head and your weight shift to the left. Your fist should make contact with the target at the same instant your weight shift is completed. This transfers your body weight into your punch i.e. punching with leverage.
