Another medal to Tyson, being the only person to drop Thomas and that also after a 15-16 punch combination.
It was very solid, even when he was shot. Holyfield, Bowe and Morrison t-eed off on a shot Thomas after the Tyson KO loss. In his prime he easily accepted the punches of good punchers such as Coetzee, Witherspoon and Weaver. I am actually surprised he sounded fairly coherent in a recent interview. He accepted some hellacious beatings toward the end of his career.
I've always wondered how a prime Thomas and a prime Bowe would've played out seeing that he took Bowe's best shots while washed up.
Agree. I think Thomas may be the most overrated of the 80s heavyweights on this forum. He was a latecomer to the sport and it really shows. Sturdy chin though.
Thomas beat peak Witherspoon, who the vast majority on this forum adore. He had a draw against Coetzee in a well fought tussle and a ko over a Weaver starting to decine (that previous DQ win may not have exactly helped him either) but still quite dangerous. He also had a good earlier win over prime James Tillis. He was probably only notable for 3 years but those wins put him in nicely with the 80's brigade. He had a 27 fight 7+ year streak even if much of it was against ordinary opposition early career. He's unpolished for sure but his jab and chin allied to some good power made up for quite a bit.
I like Pinky I always thought he was kind of an underachiever his talents were great he was in cruise control
Pinky had issues with drugs. He has a very good left, and mediocre right hand. Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, and Morrsion stopped him. He wasn't that durable.
I agree Guys above are underrating Thomas. He didn't look natural, but he was very effective. He had a great jab and a very good right hand. His defense was average but his impenetrable chin compensated for that. From '82-'85 he was very, very good. In '84-85 He was arguably the best Heavyweight in the world. He was certainly beating better competition than Larry Holmes at the time. the guy saying Bowe/Thomas would be little different if Thomas was prime must not have been following the sport back then. The Thomas that Bowe fought was completely used up. Bowe wasn't exactly a defensive master and he wasn't too hard to find. Thomas could take Bowe's power and counter with his own jab and straight right hand. It's actually a very intriguing matchup prime for prime. Lewis would be vulnerable as well to the Thomas power.
That's fair, though I also find Witherspoon to be highly overrated on this forum. Thomas was limited but had some great physical assets that served him very well and he put together a very nice run in the 80s. But in my opinion, peak performance v. peak performance, he probably would have picked up multiple losses against the more polished and fluid guys like Tucker, Douglas, Dokes, and Tubbs. But then again, I hold those guys in higher regard than most.
This content is protected That "medicore" right hand drops Weaver for the full count at 35:50 CONTEXT is your friend: Thomas showed slippage from the Berbick fight onward and Tyson finished off his prime. He was SHOT when he lost to Holyfield, Bowe and Morrison. Thomas showed great durability accepting the power shots of Coetzee, Witherspoon and Weaver.
