Bonecrusher Smith, from the Tyson fight vs McCall from the 2nd Lewis fight. This fight goes down in history and serves to initiate the eventual abolishment of boxing. Allow me to explain how this happens. During training camp, Bonecrusher spends hours watching film of the devastating right hand that McCall landed to separate Lennox Lewis from his senses and the zero on his record. That result combined with all the stories of McCall’s prowess as a top-level sparring partner shakes Bonecrusher to his core and convinces him to adopt the Boneclutcher strategy. Meanwhile, McCall spends his training camp worrying about the pain that accompanies having one’s bones crushed. He also fixates on Bonecrusher’s KO1 of Witherspoon in their 2nd fight. Once McCall reads the Wikipedia page about the fight and learns that Bonecrusher knocked out one of Witherspoon’s teeth, root and all, he completely freaks out. After a memorable “stare down” where both fighters stare directly at the canvas, too afraid to look the other fighter in the eye, they return to their corner to await the opening bell. At the bell, neither fighter steps out of their corner. Both corners go crazy, imploring their charge to fight. When the bell rings to end the round, each fighter does something that has never been done in a boxing ring. They each plop down on their stool without having had to take a single step to do so. After a few more rounds of this non-confrontational behavior, lots of screaming from both corners, and multiple warnings from the ref, McCall breaks down crying. Seeing McCall’s distress, Bonecrusher walks across the ring to give him a hug. At this point, they make what Atlas calls a “silent contract.” With a silent contract in place, the “fight” goes the distance. The most memorable thing about this “fight” is the corner work between rounds in Bonecrusher’s corner. After drenching all the towels, with McCall’s tears on Bonecrusher’s shoulders and chest, the cornermen decide to use their own clothing as a solution to the towel outage. Needless to say, the judging is epic. For the first time in history, all 3 judges AND Harold Lederman are utterly clueless with their scores. The official verdict is a unanimous draw with 2 of the 3 judges scoring the fight 120 to 120. Meanwhile Lederman agrees with the 3rd judge who submits a similar card, but with a 108 to 108 score.
I’ll take Golota by decision as McCall had a top shelf chin. It’d be interesting to see if Golota could maintain his footing, through all the tears, well enough to land his low blows.
Eddie Machen vs Zora Folley, Challenger Eliminator....But wait, that was a real bout with everything on the line, to which Cus D'amato stated: "That fight was so bad, neither one deserves a shot at the Title (held by Floyd Patterson)".
Lol! And post fight, both fighters claim they broke their hand in the first round, even though nary a punch was thrown
Henry Akinwande vs Sam Peter. I actually almost just chuckled out loud thinking about what a mess it would have been.
Round robin of the nice guys: Chris Byrd vs Eddie Chambers vs Calvin Brock vs Buster Mathis Jr. All good boxers and respectable citizens with a shortage of punching power.
