Ken Buchanan vs. Ismael Laguna I: My thoughts

The more I see of Ken Buchanan, the more impressed I get. Winning the first fight against the great Ismael Laguna was very well done. I give a few of the middle rounds to Buchanan, so with his strong finish I give him victory by a small marging. Buchanan would not have gotten the decision in Panama, it was too close for comfort. I think that Laguna was a little bit over the hill, or maybe he had weight trouble in this fight. Laguna faded in the later rounds.
The first Laguna v Ortiz fight, showed Laguna at his very best. He was as fast as a greased lightning.

Still haven't seen the first fight, but have Buchanan winning the second by three rounds, not as wide as some have it (and I'm a proud half-Scot!)

The 1st win for Buchanan elevates him to one of the best British boxers of all time and rightly so.

 

I saw the first fight live on ABC Wide World of Sports in 1970, and Buchanan was a clear winner. His corner men were so smart to put up a shade in the corner between rounds to keep Kenny as cool as a Scotsman could be in the tropical Puerto Rican heat, and that helped matters, along with, of course, Buchanan's gritty fighting spirit, which, even more than his skills, contributed to his points victory over Laguna. Guts and balls were the main keys to Buchanan's two victories over Laguna. The last three rounds of the first fight were Kenny's.

 

Ken Buchanan, in my opinion, along with Lennox Lewis and Joe Calzaghe are the three greatest British champions, along with Bob Fitzsimmons and Ted Kid Lewis.

 

Post-war I rate Buchanan 2nd behind Lennox Lewis. As their is some dispute amongst British fight fans as to where The Lions alliegance lies (I myself NOT one of them) Buchanan would move up to 1st.

Fantastic fighter, shame some people only know him as losing to Duran. He would've lost on PTS but he deserved to be able to last the distance, no doubt he was tough enough to do that, even against Prime Duran.

 

McGowan is not mentioned much on here, shame because he was a brilliant boxer. Have you seen much of him?

 

The Chionoi fights and his win over Burruni.

Not many Flyweights would have outboxed him i don't think.Mabe not even Canto.just a pity he was such a terrible bleeder.

 

From what I've read he was winning both them fights comfortably.
I've seen the last round of the Burruni fight.
I've met Walter a few times.

I moved a few months ago and all of my old dvd’s Are in storage...probably be a couple months but I am bookmarking this and will try and burn a copy in a few months...not into money but open to a trade

 

Ismael Laguna is underrated. Go to Boxrec and look at who he fought from 1965-1971. In fact, the smaller fighters in that '65-71 era were grossly overshadowed by Ali, and the media coverage was still lacking. Many fans only got real knowledge of the fight results a month later, when Ring, Boxing Illustrated, K.O. Magazine, etc. arrived in their mailboxes, or purchased at the newsstand.
