How do people see Carl Froch doing against the current 175? Take the Froch of the super 6 tournament form moving straight up after his loss to Ward but facing the following fighters as they are today... 1. Sergey Kovalev 2. Adonis Stevenson 3. Oleksander Gvozdyk 4. Artur Beterbiev 5. Dmitry Bivol 6. Sullivan Barrera 7. Badou Jack 8. Elieder Alvarez 9. Joe Smith jr 10. Marcus Browne
Kovalev 50/50 fight and would need go see more of Bivol to judge that one though he looks excellent. Would fancy Froch v rest.
Wasn't Froch/Stevenson in the pipelines years ago. Pretty sure Stevenson was a super-middle champ at the same time as Froch, and aside from Ward his best competition. I think Froch would have beaten him back then if it was made.
I'll throw my 2p in. I think Kovalev, Beterbiev and Gvozdyk all beat him, probably stop him late although I could imagine Kovalev lighting him up early. Bivol and Stevenson are 50/50 fights, I'd of liked to of seen Stevenson v Froch when it was mooted at 168. Outside of Ward it'd of been Froch's toughest test to date. I think he beats the rest but I think we'd of seen a great fight or at least exciting fight between Froch v Jack and Froch v JSJ. Right back to the general.
It would definitely have been interesting, I think it's fair to say that you could make an argument for either fighter. I'd of liked to see how Froch coped not only with the southpaw style of SuperPimp but also that left hand to the body. I've seen Carl hurt several times when fighters go to his body.
I don't think he would of done well at light heavy, despite his height and seemingly big frame he wasn't a big super middle, I'm pretty sure he came in at the low to mid 170's. And he said that he struggled to add weight on, even now he has retired he looks as lean as ever, so he would of been out weighed significantly at light heavy by guys coming in over 180lbs. Kovalev would of beaten him. As good as Froch's chin is we're talking Kovalev here, his power and accuracy would of broken him down eventually. I think Froch would of course tried his best and would of had some success but it would only be a matter of time. Froch would of had a better chance vs Stevenson. He fights more in spurts and Froch's pressure late might see him pull off a late stoppage. But it's a 50/50 fight for me, Stevenson kind of reminds me of Pascal, though with better power and foot work, I see a similar style of war as Froch brings it. Just depends can he cope with the extra fire power Stevenson brings. I'd pick him over Jack, Smith and Sullivan. Beterbiev is a tough one. Maybe Froch can box to a decision, he can't stand and trade with Beterbiev, his left hook could really punish Froch who keeps his right too low. If Froch wins it's on points, but I favour Beterbiev too be to big and strong at light heavy.
Froch is all about his granite chin and KO power, there’s not much else to his game. Not hating, he’s done well for himself fighting like he did. 175 has a lot of fighters with similar attributes, except they are natural LHW’s. It would be an uphill battle for Froch, and I doubt he’d do it, 175 is an excellent but not a very lucrative division.
He had a decent jab too and could box a bit behind it when needed to, like in the AA fights and the Groves rematch. So when faced with a big puncher who would pose a threat to even his iron chin he had a plan B when required. But guys like Kovalev would out box him as well as out punch him. Maybe he tries a cautious boxing style vs Beterbiev who he might be able to out box for some rounds until Beterbiev draws him into a war.
Froch had a hell of alot more to his game than that. Several opponents made the same wrong assumptions and found out after fighting him he had other world class attributes. Things like world class jab, footwork judging off distance, defensive skills (not many opponents got to punch him full force as he kept them at distance and put in cute little faints that made them miss or land with glancing blows).
Kovalev, Beterbiev, Gvozdyk, Bivol, would have murder Froch! Golovkin at 168 would have knocked Froch out, styles make fights and Froch's style was made for Golovkin..................I liked Froch as a fighter, enjoyed his fights with Taylor, etc., he had a good chin, would come off the canvas and come back..................can't be underestimated..............
Froch was a natural career long SMW. He was also flattened and out on his feet by big punching SMW Groves. Murderous (literally) punching Kovalev would have annihilated Froch. Kovalev like Froch is a natural career long LHW. The difference in size would be marked. There's not a chance in hell Froch could handle his power or boxing skill. Ward absolutely played with Froch and went life and death and KD by a straight against Kovalev. The levels between Froch and Kovalev are serious. All of the hard punching 175ers like Bivol, Beterbiev and Gvozdyk would have most likely stopped Froch. There's a reason why he never considered moving up except for a catchweight against a natural MW in Golovkin which says it all really.
