Pound for pound who was better, joe Louis or ray Robinson

Equally good.

Joe Louis at 200.
Robinson at 147.

I wouldn't expect anyone in history of same weight to beat them at their absolute best.

 

P4P Sugar Ray Robinson is the GOAT. He was flawless he's the perfect fighter.

If Ali and Louis said that he is the GOAT P4P then there is nothing more to say.

 

There's plenty more to say because that's what the whole concept of p4p is all about, people opinions. p4p is all made up and not something that can ever be proven. If SRR was given a heavyweight body, would he be beat Ali and Louis? Maybe but then maybe if Ali or Louis were magically transformed into middleweights or welterweights, they would become better fighters than Robinson was at those weights?

 

I don't know if there's ever been a fighter without any flaws. Maybe Robinson at WW was the closest there's ever been - he was undefeated at the weight after all - but I don't know that there's ever been a fighter who could master every opponent's style or beat everyone. There's usually been someone whose style was Kryptonite to a fighter. But if we're talking p4p, Robinson was practically the fighter for whom the term was invented so I'm going to say he is the greater of the two. But I don't really get including heavyweights in p4p discussions anyway because it's a moot point.

Robinson was much better. Robinson had by far better chin, much better footwork, i think that he was even better than louis in his best department throwing combinations. Robinson was better at everything pfp except accuracy that it is a draw

That's a point but it means more than that, imo, it's impossible for welterweights to fight at a 40-60 pound weight difference as heavies do

 

I do like the thinking that weight disparity within the division should be factored in .. when you peel it back, it's actually the percentage of body weight in pounds/difference which is the real measure instead of the just the actual pounds .. If Jimmy Wilde is out weighed by 14 pounds, it's more significant than a heavy at 220 pounds being out weighed by 25 pounds

Even in his prime J.Louis showed a lot of flaws, he pawed with his jab a lot , slow footed, chin, wasn't the best. His offensive deadlyness masked a great deal. R.Robinson is considered the best to ever do it for a reason. Not just the style , speed,and power he showed in the ring, but must importantly who he defeated, and when he defeated them. Look at the names Angott, Gavilan,Armstrong,Bell, Lomatta,Turpin the list just goes on, slick boxers, pressure fighters, defensive specialist, devastating power puncher. Smaller fighters, bigger heavier fighters. Louis's ledger isn't even in the same ball park. The only fighter who fought that type of competition when the competition was at or close to their primes and won consistently was the other "Sugar Ray". But on a much smaller scale when you compared career longevity. And of course Ali.

 

Sugar Ray Robinson by a good amount too.

 

I definitely agree that Robinson is the GOAT....but I don't agree with your logic.

A lot of other ATG's would say Ali is the greatest, doesn't mean he is

 

Louis had flaws...that were exploited by guys like Schmeling and Walcott. I'm not aware of SRR having any flaws or any opponent that he couldn't figure out. Plus he fought from 147 to 175 (Maxim) where as Louis was at only one weight or division his entire career.
