While less than 2% of the population is 6'2" or taller, I wonder how many men walking around, at 105 pounds box professionally. So I checked, and according to Box rec, there are 177 registered active straw weights. By contrast, there are 1,452 active light weights, 1,035 active middleweights, and 873 active heavyweights. So clearly the Straw Weight division has the fewest active members of the weight classes I checked, which leads me to the question. With people getting bigger, will humanity grow out of the straw weight division to the point where say less than 50 active fighters remain, and the division is all but disbanded?
They already do this in Mexico and Asia. Strawweights will continue to come from poor backgrounds, where one’s ability to consume 3 square meals a day is considered a luxury.
There is a division below straw weight called Light minimumweight or Atomweight. It was created in 2007. This division, which starts at 99 pounds with a weight limit of 102 pounds-can be seen in the amateurs and has been sanctioned as well in the professional ranks. Sometimes its referred to as pin weight. I'll let wiser minds comment on who the best Atomweight of all time was.
If you want to find out, you want to compare the percentage of boxers who are strawweights over time.
Good post .I was thinking about this the other day .Perhaps the division will cease to exist in the future .better diet is making people worldwide bigger on average .
A lot depends upon what countries get involved. Lets say that there was a change of leadership in North Korea, and it became a locus for professional boxing? There is also the issue of women's boxing.
The problem with Strawweight is the money there just isn't that great. So there's a lot less incentive to start with. Little men can make more as a jockey than a strawweight champion. And if you're just a journeyman strawweight you're probably better off being a chimney sweep.
Didn't you ever see the little jump and click of his heels that Ricardo Lopez used to do whenever he laid out some diminutive, overmatched mug? His entry music was Chim Chim Cheree in Spanish.
Seriously though, we've basically outgrown it on a natural level anyway, it ain't normal for someone to drain themselves to that kind of weight and the guys that do it are just flyweights anyway. All of the junior divisions below featherweight are pointless, they just dilute the talent pool and disperse it.
When I was at some Muai Thai fights in Thailand they put kids' fights at the end of the cards. Those were the most crude, brutal and short ones. Very entertaining though.
