This is question based on a previous thread Marvin of the (SRL fight and his last), against Barkley of the ( Duran) fight
Barkley caught Hearns with a beautifully timed overhand right that shattered Hearns completely. If he did the same to Hagler... it would have bounced off him. I can see a similar fight to Hagler-Mugabi here. Barkley would probably have some success but Marvin would be too strong for him. I think at this stage of his career and given the problems he had with a mover like Leonard, a fighter like Michael Nunn would give Hagler all kinds of problems, whereas a slugger like Barkley would be made to measure. Mid-to-late rounds stoppage win for Hagler is my prediction.
I love Barkley but even against 87 version of Marvin , I see him losing painfully. I'll go with Barkley attacking and doing pretty good for a few rounds. But gradually Hagler gets in to his stride and connecting more .By the 8th Barkley s face would be a Mass of cuts and bumps , forcing his corner to stop the fight.
Hagler was ready to be taken. I understand the majority here believe Hagler would be able to stop Barkley , but I will be the lone voice of dissent if need be. Iran would win this on points. Hagler was slow, unable to get of his combinations and hesitant. He had all the hallmarks of being a shot fighter at this point in his career. Leonard knew this as well. Iran would have used his size to his advantage, he would have dwarfed Hagler. He had great speed and the ability to absorb shots. Iran could put his punches together, and Hagler would have felt them and been hit by them often. I don't think Barkley would have knocked him out, but he would have won pretty easily on points. Hagler was done. Leonard was a vulture in this regard. I am surprised how little respect Iran gets. He would have won this.
I agree with your premise, Hagler had all the appearance of being shot against Leonard. He looked like he was underwater at times. I don't think that Hagler would have stopped that Iran Barkley and Iran could win a decision.
The thing i dont ever see discussed is (and i can understand why it isnt discussed).....Iran could actually box....it was around about when tommy was rearranging his body and head the first time id pin it to the end of round 2....that iran realised boxing wasnt for him....slugging was to be for him....so we recall the remorseless slugger of the nunn, toney ,hearns 2 and van horn fights....but even in the duran fight ,iran spent a major part patiently boxing and moving even...the benn fight too he tried to box but benn turned it into a streetfight .....the kalambay fight tho u had 15 rounds of iran trying to box..my point is iran could actually box reasonably skillfully (speed, movement, good combinations from a compact shape)...he didnt just slug nunn...there was a major chunk of the fight where he boxed nunn countering cutely making him miss...u dont take nunn to a split decision unless u can box a bit.. Now than...knowing what hagler did to tommy and mugabi ,2 brutal powerpunchers who met him headfirst....would iran think it best to try to do the same thing ?(u can add minter to that destroyed for meeting marvin head on)....or would iran decided to go with the boxer style he used with kinchen and kalambay and in part nunn??....if he meets him head on i see marvin 1987 tearing his face to shreds on the way to a 7th round knockout ....if he mixes it up and boxes it lasts the distance with hagler winning 8-4 or 7-5 than retiring
