Personally I've never even thought this was up for debate.
Liston was an ATG bomber,Peter a crude clubber.
    Agree?
    Disagree?

Agreed. Peter only had 20 fights, between 10-12 rounds, with only 9 KO's .. Liston had 41 fights, between 10-15 rounds, with 33 KO's ... enough said

why is this thread even being made? Peter was a 6 round clubber lucky to get a title. Too lucky even.

Liston comes out easily on the top here.
Peter more along the lines of Ruddock in my eyes.

That is an insult to Ruddock.

Ah, a spin off from the Wlad vs. Liston thread.

A better question is would Peter be the best puncher Liston ever faced? I say maybe and he had a better chin that Glass Cleveland Williams.

James Toney said Peter hit harder than Rahman so there's a benchmark on Peter's power.

Liston certainly applied his power better in the real world of the boxing ring, but if you tested Sam Peter's and Sonny Liston's best left hook under laboratory conditions, it wouldn't surprise me if Peter's left hook registered more force nor would it surprise me if Liston's registered more force.

    Toney really said that?

I would say Liston was better puncher - better technique - and a better fighter. Who punched harder probably Liston but at 240lbs Peter was a heavy hitter I remember going into the first fight with Wlad many felt he was the future of the division because of his power.

I agree with this. We all know who the better and greater fighter was but it's far from obvious to me that Liston's best punch was harder than Peter's.

    This.

Liston was great because he was accurate in addition to hitting hard.

Peter hit hard in spite of his accuracy. Calling him a crude clubber is correct.

The question is, if the crude clubber lands, could he in fact be hitting harder than Liston? I say he could well be.

Here's a compilation of some of Sam Peter's knockouts. You may want to switch the sound off:

The first thing that you will notice is his woeful technique. He was Wilder, before Wilder. He has a great deal of trouble landing flush. The second thing that you will notice is the moment that he does land flush, the other guys drop like they've been shot. This is NOT a man that you want to brawl with. He's throwing everything into those shots.

what it indicates is that the opposition didnt want to box at all, they were there for a paycheck. Pretty much like everyones early career bum club...but for you this is the one thats different.

Not obvious that Liston hit harder than Ruddock either, punch for punch.
