If Monzon has a stylistic advantage it would that he is not predictable and quite unorthodox. There is no simple pattern to his work and he is quite comfortable under any circumstance. He is anything but your typical top fighter. I always found Monzon supreme at adapting while Hagler imo is below par in this area for such a great fighter. Monzon is a great in ring thinker, Hagler not so much for mine. Monzon would be a problem Marvin would never solve imo. He'd be more dangerous in a rematch but again Monzon can adapt to any change of strategy.
What's kind of funny now is that, until page 8, you were the only poster to have used the term or implied a "stylistic edge" (and, in favor of Hagler); not elaborated on, beyond you understating Monzon's capabilities in the ring, i.e. a work-behind-the-jab, circling thrower of one-twos. Period. This is not a new position for you to take on Monzon, in fantasy match-ups. You may have missed it but most of those favoring Monzon are doing so by the finest of margins; able to appreciate Hagler's greatness, as well as Monzon's. This is because it is most likely an extremely close-run contest. I am not sure why you are unable to recognize the same, without using terms like 'overrated' and reducing Monzon's capabilities to a, quite frankly, insulting pigeon-hole.
what a bunch of nonsense! still peddling the Monzon's "intelligence". 30 years behind! You said the same thing about the fool proof SRL until i brought up the Norris fight and speaking of falling behind, what happens when Monzon falls behind in the battle of the jabs? He'll have to change tactics. what's he going to do, put pressure on Hags? John, dont try to do any of the thinking; it's already been done for you. Just watch the video and enjoy it. I know I did
says the guy who actually said "Hagler is not really a middleweight" you still havent told us how Monzon is going to connect on Hagler with those amazingly slow hands I admire Monzon's disciplined approach to fights but the one here with the advantages is actually Marvin since Marvin has faced MANY right handers How many southpaws has Monzon faced? Now THAT is what you call your stylistic advantage
that guys is a knucklehead we automatically know this when he revealed his insight (Hagler is not even a middleweight) the rest of us are not privy to
I'm normally not big on trolls but i have to admit you provide enough humor to make it (almost?) somewhat enjoyable to have you kicking around the forum. Still reeling them in a decade and a half later
i know you're old but you even think old you cant even think of a proper rebuttal when your outdated views are challenged. it's the same unimaginative bringing down of the opponent because you have nothing else to offer. no in depth analysis, just "I think Hagler is a choker and not very smart" watch, I'll prove it right here: So John, how DOES Monzon handle hagler's jab considering the fact he has seldom faced southpaws, and certainly not a world class southpaw, and even WORSE, nowhere near anyone of hagler's caliber, ruggedness, chin, defense, mobility, etc, etc etc what does Monzon do when Hagler establishes movement to his right? How does Monzon land his right or even his slow motion jab?
so says the man with no ability to provide any details of Monzon's "stylistic advantage" nor can you when he has no infighting game, and less offense
Red - i stopped giving in depth answers to yourself a long time ago. One can only cast pearls to blind swine for so long ya know You only ask the questions from one side of the fence. You see the thing is we know how well Monzon handles different styles, strategies and dilemna's. At the stage when Marvin was getting slickly outboxed by SRL Monzon was repelling the best contender in the world, back to back and then retiring gracefully. You've got the horse before the cart mate
i asked you HOW Monzon would settle with Marvin's jab and hook from the southpaw position especially in light of the fact Monzon did not face southpaws in his defenses. You claim that he handles different styles but of those he faced, which fought him left handed? no details and in fact, you didnt even realize Monzon lacks experience facing southpaws until I brought it up So how is Monzon going to get Marvin to move to his left instead of moving to his right??? only by doing this, would he have any kind of chance you call THIS convincing ??? "At the stage when Marvin was getting slickly outboxed by SRL Monzon was repelling the best contender in the world, back to back and then retiring gracefully." that doesnt tell me anything and in the time it took you to type it up, you could have provided those details. and naturally, you refused. you refused b/c you prefer to recycle the same hot air. if you dont know you dont know
Monzon's right hand is as straight as a gun barrel, pinpoint accurate, long and he's not afraid to lead with it. This alone will hold him in good stead vs a southpaw.
The theory is very easy but dealing with it with monzon in the ring is another history, for sure that your loved hagler would not laugh with his face like a burguer
I think the issue is just how much faith you put in Monzon's opponents and his performance during his title reign verses Hagler's, since that would seem to be the best empirical barometer to judge a hypothetical matchup by. Myself, I think less of Bouttier, Tonna, Licata an old Griffith and a bloated Napoles than Hagler's foes and in actually watching these defenses again, I think less of his performances against these weaker opponents than Hagler's too. I think the legend of Monzon has grown independently of his actual performances, much like the revisionist "Larry Holmes could beat prime Ali" nonsense going around here. My guess is Hagler's ferocity and forcefulness would overrun Monzon's more subtle boxing skills and would lead to Monzon getting roughed up pretty good over the distance. Can't see Carlos hurting Hagler enough to keep him at bay. Sorry I interrupted the insults and name-calling. You can resume the regularly scheduled programming now.
