Roy Jones Jr: “Mayweather never came close to what I did”

I rate Mayweather over him by a good margin.

 

It's a wide gap when you just look at peak vs. peak. Jones was better

 

wow hes trying hard to sell his fight, even lying to do so.

 

Mayweather never had a Toney or Hopkins on his resume.

 

I tend to agree with this. Jones's star burned brighter at its apex, Mayweather is an undeniable great, but I think his caution put a ceiling on that greatness when we're talking all time legacy.

 

I agree, as well. At his best, Jones was on another level.

 

Both were the draw, and with that came the cherry picking and list of demands .. To bad neither were close to I'll fight anyone anywhere anytime type of boxers to prove they were TBE .. I have Jones above Mayweather p4p

 

Nah. Mayweather still has a tremendously superior resume.

 

If flashy and/or popular equaled greater- then perhaps. Mayweather was more skilled and able to adapt against any type of fighter. This one isn’t really even close and I am not particularly fond of either guy so I don’t really have a dog in this fight

 

Hopkins in his prime.
Toney in his prime.
That's all that needs to be said.

 

Hopkins and Jones were both pre-prime in my estimation

 

Actually comparing their careers floyd has to be ranked above jones pfp even if you get mad admitting it

 

Roy fought two prime, great fighters in Hopkins and Toney. He also beat Ruiz which would be like Floyd going up and beating a good light heavyweight. Floyd on the other hand has Jose Luis Castillo as his best , prime opponent which isnt saying much really.

Both fighters were guilty of cherry picking at times in my opinion and I would go as far as to say that some of Roy's opposition was disgraceful ( Glenn Kelly and Richard Frazier for example were far worse fighters than anyone Mayweather fought except a certain MMA practitioner ), but as far as the question goes it's Jones all day for mine.

As far as career endings go, nobody crucifies Robinson or Ali so why should Jones be treated differently ?

 

I disagree here, a prime Jones, the one I'm saying peak for peak was clearly better than May, didn't "have issues adapting against any type of fighter". He easily beat most any fighter put in front of him, and convincingly so. Jones isn't referring to his past prime exploits or lack there of. He's talking about his rise and peak imo, and in that area, he's correct in saying he was better. May has longevity on his side, as well as a deeper resume, but he's not on his level peak for peak. May struggled and lost to Castillo in his prime. I rarely saw Roy lose rounds in his prime.
