I agree, he has looked fairly mediocre since the Jennings win. He looks like the typical Wilder opponent now.

Something is fishy.................Haymon would not allow Wilder to fight Ortiz unless there is something wrong with Ortiz. Heard rumors that Haymon has options on Ortiz, that bothers me, Breazeale is preparing to sub, is owned by Haymon, something is just not right................boxing is very corrupt, could be that Wilder plans on running so Ortiz runs out of gas, as Haymon will own the judges, referee and boxing commission, nobody can say no to Haymon, this all goes into the equation.................Ortiz did look bad in his last fight, was sucking wind...............has to take blood pressure medicine.................of course, if Ortiz were to win, he would be framed like he was before and like Povetkin was, even though Povetkin was cleared by VADA, WBC had to protect their Haymon fighter.....................WBC appears to take orders from Haymon......................

I agree in part. Ortiz was built up as some monster just because he beat Jennings. He was never as good as his most vocal proponents said. This myth was created that he was being ducked by everyone but the truth is prior to the Jennings fight nobody cared about Ortiz. Then after that fight he ducked out of the Ustinov fight to become the WBA mandatory and then ducked out of a mandatory fight with Joshua in favour of facing Wilder who everyone regards as an easier path to a title. Ortiz simply isn't the monster he's made out to be.

I do think Ortiz has aged though and is past prime. Not because of the Scott or Allen fights, I expected him to struggle with Scott's movement, no surprise there, the Ortiz who KO'ed Jennings would of looked just as bad vs Scott. And with hindsight the Allen fight only exposed a pre-existing flaw namely Ortiz's inability to move through gears, he's a one paced fighter and always has been.

The Martz fight for me was the first sign of real decline, he looked noticeably slower. I expect Wilder's speed and explosiveness to be Ortiz's biggest issue. He may struggle to react and respond to Wilder's attacks. He is one paced and I think will struggle to put consistent pressure on Wilder because of this. If Ortiz does win it will be because of a huge mistake Wilder makes and will be a sudden KO, not a gradual beat down.

 

Ortiz looked awful in his last fight................he has aged a lot, perhaps the blood pressure medicine has some bad side effects................? He looks sick, well, he is sick.................

 

Superb breakdown as always. Provided the fight is on the level and Ortiz actually comes to win I see a similar situation unfolding.

My one point of contention is with your first paragraph, that Ortiz was never the monster he was built up to be. Jennings was considered a top fighter at the time and had just pushed Wlad the distance in a much closer than expected fight. Ortiz not only beat him easier than Wlad but destroyed him. He also around that time demolished the old but still tough Tony Thompson in a fight in which Thompson was getting dropped hard by every clean punch. Not even Wlad could achieve that.

Those two wins alone, coming when they did, were enough to show that Ortiz was easily on par with Klitschko in the puncher stakes and had the skills and wherewithal to make his shots count against bonafide top class and experienced opposition. Since then he's not capitalised on the wins and his star has faded somewhat, but that shouldn't diminish the genuine buzz that surrounded this guy back then.

Not comparing Ortiz to Wlad, because Wlad has been there and done it for over a decade. I do think that Ortiz can punch as hard and think that Ortiz is a dangerous fight for any of the current heavyweights.

 

I agree about Ortiz's punching power. He's one of the hardest punchers in the division today, his power is legit, the counter left he used on Martz was brutal. If you stand in front of Ortiz you're in for a world of hurt.

 

That's probably the fair perspective. I can be a harsh dickhead, and like most people slow to change my tune.
