Pacquiao or De La Hoya for Hatton. Which makes better sense?

    So, we could very easily see Ricky Hatton take on either Manny Pacquiao or Oscar De La Hoya at the end of this year or sometime early next year. I have been thinking about it and cannot determine who is the better opponent for Hatton. There are so many factors to take into consideration. Here they are as I see them:

    De La Hoya Pros

    More money if fought state-side
    Arguably bigger contribution to legacy (due to going up in weight)
    Less complicated promotion
    If he beats De La Hoya better than Mayweather did, it could pull Mayweather out for a rematch


    De La Hoya Cons

    Probably the tougher fight (though this is certainly open to debate)
    Won't raise Hatton on the PFP list (much)
    If beaten, considerable drop in chances of Mayweather rematch
    Must go up in weight, which has been demonstrated as a difficult move for Hatton


    Paqcuiao Pros

    Fighting a better PFP fighter
    Fighting someone lighter, so has weight advantage
    Probably easier fight to win


    Paqcuiao Cons

    If he loses: considerable drop in esteem, probably pressure for retirement (remember all the talk post-Mayweather? That was after going UP in weight)
    Probably less money (depending on site)
    If he wins: still leaves questions open to his ability at his weight and higher weights, can be discredited due to Manny's lower weight, probably won't be a decisive win so potential for controversy (maybe?)


    So, I guess my final analysis is to suggest De La Hoya. More money and less risk if Hatton loses. After all, De La Hoya took Mayweather to a split decision. People will be able to use this, and the fact that Hatton went up in weight, to say he just can't handle things above Jnr. Welter.

    Beating Manny though would be more interesting. Manny is at his peak (some would argue) and Oscar is not (I doubt there are any arguements there). Beating a peak Pacquiao may make Hatton more relevant to the scene... I am not sure on that one.

    Oscar is too big for Hatton but the money would be huge. A Pacquaio fight would be a classic in my opinion and that would be the right option for team Hatton to take.

    both huge fights,get a bigger pay day v oscar or the more winnable fight v pac,as a hatton fan id pay to see both but if i had to pick id say fight pac

    I agree that De La Hoya would probably beat Hatton. I think Oscar is the more threatening of the two choices. To be honest though, I think both men can beat Ricky. I like him a lot, but I just don't see him winning either match.

    its funny how the pac-hatton fight use to be just a dream match up and now little by little becoming a reality

    Hatton has no business being in the same ring as Oscar. And I like Ricky.

    The harsh reality is that Hatton is just too small. And with his come forward "in your face" style, he is custom made for De La Hoya.

    Hatton would be systematically beaten up and stopped.

    Pacquiao, as it is actually winnable

    They are both terrible matchups that raise no excitement for me. He's too big for Pacquiao, and he's too small for De La Hoya, he's already proven he can't fight above 140

    Pacquiao is the better fight for many reasons..

    *Size (Weight wise & experience fighting at that weight)
    *Power (Hatton's Punching Power will be equal if not more so than Pac)
    *Aggresive (Pacquiao will not be hard to find, he will be in Hattons face)
    *Style (That in your chest style will be something that Pac has not seen)
    * + it's the fight I'd rather watch...lol

    I really think one of the two fights is going to happen. All three fighters would be crazy not to push for it. There is a lot of money to be made, and for some, a lot of legacy to be developed. Imagine, for instance, Pacquiao beating Hatton and then beating De La Hoya! Where would he stand after that? If he was not PFP after that, Calzaghe better be unified HW champ.

    Cant see De La Hoya happening really for the weight reasons already stated. Only options for Hatton now are Pac or clean out LWW - hope he goes for the second and then a retirement bout with Pac presuming both are still around!

    I think the DLH is lower risk for Hatton, in a twisted way. If he lost, fair enough, much bigger guy etc, whilst if he won there would be the old adage of yet another shot fighter etc etc.

    Pac is a much higher risk - it is a fight I would expect him to win, with size being the biggest difference between the two you could say that Pac would be the proverbial rag doll. If he lost though, that would be the end - losing to a former flyweight world champ etc etc even though Pac has proven his mettle much higher up on the scales than that.

    The Pac fight could be in UK in front of 100k - perhaps more at Croke Park in Dublin, whilst getting DLH over here would prove troublesome IMO.

    Can Oscar even make 147 anymore? And Hatton's going to fight at a 150 catch-weight? Ridiculous match-up. Oscar would ktfo Hatton within three.

    since pac weighs as a LWW or a WW during fight night, he would just come in like that during the weigh in and would still be like that during the fight night
