ponce de leon and quintana both got knocked down in the 1st round pretending that they weren't phased but obviously they were and it showed when they tried to get back up and their legs were still ****ing wobbily and their opponent noticed it and inevitably it leads to their knockout.....
there are so many incidents where boxers want to show their toughness by getting right back up after a knockdown.

some obvious fights that come to my mind are

    vargas vs trinidad
    tszyu vs judah

just stay on the canvas until the 8 count!!!

You say that like you have tried it. Sometimes when you get knocked down you're just so stunned and so into the atmosphere that you just get back up without notice, happens to some people and others can control it and stay down. Some of them are even too dazed/hurt from the punch that they just jump up now knowing exactly what the hell they're doing. You clearly never was in such position so shut it, don't think you sounding smart here means anything, I'm pretty sure their trainers teach them that but when it happens it's a different story because THEY'RE the ones in that situations, not their trainer nor you.

Hmm, now all we have to do is to work out what it is about being brutally punched to the floor that could be leading to these examples of less-than-clear-thinking and we'll have cracked it....:huh

you're an idiot. you're not a professional boxer either so you cant really say what exactly goes on in the fighters mind in that type of situation.

Staying down until 8 was the only thing Lockett did right in his fight.

He isn't an idiot. I havent been KO'd but I have had my bell rung very badly in the gym just before the round ended. I didn't fall but I lost some vision and hearing for what was probably only a second or two, but I can tell you that it was very disorienting just to feel like I had lost some sense of everything for a moment.

Now picture being hit harder, repeatedly through a fight, with the lights and huge croud, and the ref, and pressure of getting up... its instinct that these guys are firing in these fights. They don't get the benefit of looking at it from air conditioned homes on t.v.

Great post, man. I've been down a few times in boxing, and it's really hard to think straight in that situation. Instinct takes over very easily.

Spot on as usual. Most people don't know how they will react until they find themselves in that sitution and some respond better than others.

i agree most times it is just reaction but there are occasions where it is pride getting you up too soon.
