Jimmy Carruthers' KO of Vic Toweel might be the most extraordinary in all filmed boxing

    Wtf?

There are stories that Toweel was struggling with his weight, but this is still absolutely extraordinary.

Carruthers was just 14-0 and had been beating up Australians with mad nicknames for a year before setting sail for South Africa where he took on a seasoned Toweel who had never been stopped for the championship of the world. There, he launches a vicious attack not seen since the days of Terry McGovern, throws more than a hundred punches in just over a minute and knocks the champion clean out of the ring before throwing the title belt over his shoulder and heading back to Australia.

    Crazy.

Holy crap! That was brutal, just relentlessly hammering away at Toweel. I came in here wondering just how outlandish this would have to be to live up to that title, but I do think it's up there.

    Damn, savage.

The production takes a lot of the oomph out of what would otherwise look like a very brutal KO

Carruthers career is insane. I wish he hadn't come out of retirement. What he did was just so perfect and beautiful.

Just curious, were you legitimately unaware?
I'm always interested in how people perceive footage.

Retiring at 19-0 as world champion straight after beating a Thai copper outside in the pissing it down rain with no shoes on. Well done that man. Jimmy looked a tremendous fighter, shame he didn't hang around long enough for Halimi, Macias, Becerra etc.

I thought they were, but I had some doubt that it might have just been bad recording equipment, a bit degraded etc. and it's not something I've seen mentioned.

G'day Mr McGrain, Carruthers holds a special place in Aussie boxing history as he was our first undisputed world champion. Stylistically Carruthers was a huge bantamweight with excellent hand and foot speed and a big left hand.

It was such a shame Carruthers had to come back due to financial pressures a full seven years after his retirement as undisputed world bantamweight champion.

He came back as a featherweight - lightweight and similarly to the great Carlos Zarate he was a shadow of the fighter he had been.

He was also infamous for having a 30 ft long tapeworm that was discovered after his title defence against the American fighter " Pappy " Gault. It is believed Carruthers picked up the parasite in South Africa.
