An excellent thread with some very good and sensible replies which is rather odd considering it is a Tyson thread.

I remember this fight as if it was yesterday, Tyson was my favourite fighter in the 80's and 90's and i honestly felt he would blow Holyfield away in a couple of rounds with the minimum of troublejust like the Spinks fight.

My opinion started to change when i saw Holyfield come down to the ring, sing hymns and looking like he was the happiest guy in the arena, which is not what you expect to see from a guy about to go in against Mike Tyson.

After the 1st few rounds, when Tysond best shots were just bouncing of Holys chin i thought that Holy was going to spring the upset and that someone upstairs was on his side that night.

In my opinion that was Holyfields greatest ever performance as a heavyweight.

It was truely a great night of boxing between 2 of the best Heavyweights ever.

I do still think that prime for prime Tyson beats Holyfield.

    Dear Friends
    kind regards
Here is the shameful rematch between Holyfield and Tyson that I have highlighted plenty of times here.

    Part 1.

    Part 2.

    Part 3.

Tyson's earbiting of Holyfield has to be one of the most heinous acts that I have ever witnessed.
I know that Tyson enthusiasts defend his actions because of the headbutting, even though both men's styles demand close confrontation in which headbutts will occur.
I await the excuses for Tyson's actions.
    yours thankfully

There was no excuse for the earbiting and this is coming from a Tyson fan, he just went crazy that night.

On the other hand Holyfield is a very dirty fighter and has got away with many fouls in loads of different fights over the years but seems to get away with it because of his persona.

As much as I was rooting for Holyfield in this fight, at the time I thought he had no chance. People who weren't around in that time period may not remember that he was thought to have been washed up, he was coming off some bad performances - and indeed, this is why Tyson and his people took the fight. What they didn't bargain for were Evander's tenacity, his iron chin, and his overall superiority to Tyson. We look back and say, "oh of course Holyfield had his number" - but at the time, this was a SHOCKING upset.

I loved this fight, I think the world pretty much had Holyfield in a pine box and assumed that Tyson would just blow him out of there, I had made a couple of bets on the fight in favor of Holyfield and man would you beleive the faces in my livingroom when the first KD took place, I remember one of my friends saying towards the big right hand in the tenth, "I dont think Mikes gonna win this one". anyhow it was truely a real life Rocky fight.

Good thing for "Evan Fields" that there obviously was no competent drug testing back then. But props to him because i didn't even think with hgh and roids he could beat even a headhunting tyson but he did.

    Dear Zakman
    kind regards
    I agree with your comments.
Holyfield looked dehydrated in his last match against Bowe and sloppy against Czyz
But obviously Holyfield never lost his heart and got himself prepared for this match.
Holyfield is one of those guys that I really admire, but he is a walking contradiction.
He is a Christian, yet is the Father to many illegitimate children and an adulterer.
Furthermore, he acts humble, but in reality, he is a ruthless and fearless competitor.
Most people would pay to have Holyfield's guts, he was afraid of nothing.
    What a man.
    yours thankfully

Got to agree with this, Holyfield was headbutting Lewis to death too when they fought but it was obviously a little more difficult with a 6 foot 5 guy than it was with a 5 foot 11 guy. Don't get me wrong Tyson was a dirty ******* too. I still think that prime Tyson takes prime Holyfield, and whoever said that Tyson couldn't do 15 rounds is just wrong. Up until the Bruno fight Tyson was a machine, after that it all went wrong. The person to blame? Tyson himself.

Agree with that too, Holyfield was the bravest of the brave. Watching that film the fact that he kept on going after both those bites is just amazing. Fighting anyone with part of your ear bitten off is impressive enough, but fighting Tyson with it bitten off? Incredible.

Hard to watch, Tyson was my favorite and he took a beating. I remember ESPN had round by round updates and they came back after the 10th and said Tyson was hurt bad and then said it was over, Mike Tyson has been knocked out.............I was speechless and I felt a state of shock. Tyson was beaten physically and MENTALLY that night.
