After his fight with B-Hop the name that immediately went through my head was Glen Johnson. Looked to me like the size differential was so big in that Calzaghe - Hopkins fight that all Bernard had to do is come forward and he would have easily knocked Joe out. Unfortunately for Hops, he prety much stuck to his backing up style the entire fight. Now take Glen Johnson's come forward style into account along with his size advantage, and I think he'd give Joe Calzaghe all he could handle. I'm prety much just going to be dreaming about this fight though since sadly I don't think there's any way Joe would ever take a fight with Glen. There's just not enough money in it.
Style wise id say Dawson but Joe still beats him imo, even though Jc is older he would still have better workrate and quick combinations, Dawso has been hit alot against lesser fight aswel as hurt, he also seemed to lack concentration in what was the biggest fight of his life vs Johnson. Calzaghe beats him on pts. I find it shocking that people think johnson would win a single round against Calzaghe. his plodding forward, take two to try and land one style is absolutely made for Calzaghe even more so than Pavlik as he doesnt have the youth to fight for a full 12 rounds, he'll happily drop points and leave it to the last minute to gain some back, basically a sign of saving energy. Joe UDs him all night long.
for me the question isn't who can beat calzaghe but who could he have fought when it mattered. i've said this before but frank warren doesn't risk his cash cows in risky fights and JC consciously knew this. so did ricky hatton which is why hatton left him, made his mark in the US and got his career-defining fight against floyd while JC bypassed jones and hopkins (prime) in order to milk the british public. for me taking about calzaghe as a "who can beat him" fighter is like the children's story of 'the emperor's new clothes'. if enough people see it, it exists. but the truth is he was protected from career-defining fights his whole career and warren is only 'risking' him now because his expiry date is fast approaching. this is what warren does.
A defensive counterpuncher frustrates Joe, and he always looks worse against opponents he has to go looking for That said, the best current chance is Dawson
Bad Chad Dawson has the best chance a southpaw with a good jab, good workrate throws every punch in the book, good combo puncher goes to the body has good handspeed good footwork and defense. He's a nightmare for Calzaghe
For all the years Ive watched Joe, Oh how i wanted him to LOSE!!!!!!!! but he keeps adapting, hes just never fights the same every fight totally unpredictable and he fought some Huge Punchers who were on search and destroy missions, but the £$%^ always wins its getting annoying, Please Pavlik Dawson are my last Hope, But unfortunately Pavlik No matter how powerful he is and i rate him very highly, height isnt going to be a problem how tall was mario veitch, make no mistake Veitch is no wear near pavliks level, but I just can see Pavlik getting out box all night long, Hope Im wrong!!! . That left jab of Joe is firm, circle to Pavliks counter left ......left jab, Pavlik throws right but would be shorter (cant throw the left cus it be hyper extended..... joe times the counter right comes to right quick left cross back to circling clockwise, ALL night, Pavlik cant get no power shots off so trys mixing it up to the body but leaves his self open ....UD12 PAVLIK has the one punch power to wobble joe, but he must and i repeat he must go all out dont leave it to points, AKA lacey but with skill, only way to beat joe is to stop him DEAD in his tracks POWER!!!!!!!!!!! Knock him the $$%%^^ b out, thats the only way to beat joe, skill wise i learnt my lesson, joe will match every fighters skill level and kick it up a knotch,
Hrmm.. I'd say Chad Dawson.. If not, then Kelly Pavlik.. I say give Pavlik a year or two, but I don't think Calzaghe will be around much longer..
