Max Schmeling vs the best of the 1970's era

I'd say max in the 70 s would be on a Joe Bugner type level. He'd beat most top Brits ,Europeans etc ,a couple of contenders in the top 20 .But when it came to the top names Ali ,Frazier, Foreman etc he ends up losing. Not to say his style is like Joe's but roughly the same success.

 

Strongly disagree. Schmeling had tools Buckner could only dream of. An elite, fast, sniper like right hand, great counterpunching skills, fantastic head movement, off the charts intelligence, and he had a lot of power in his fists...

Schmeling put up perhaps the greatest boxing performance we have ever seen defeating a prime Joe Louis.

Performances like that shows he was capable of beating a Holmes, Ali, Frazier, or foreman.

Now he wouldn't win a series vs those men, but I'd bet top dollar that he would defeat 1 of those 4

I think Schmeling has the right style to beat Holmes. And Norton.

Well you are a Rocky Marciano fan so nothing you say should be taken seriously. Schmeling beating Joe Louis proved Joe Louis had a glass chin. Beating a 200 pound slow footed Joe Louis doesn't equate to him beating any of the people you name. Norton, Lyle, Young, Holmes, Frazier, Ali, and Foreman would all beat Schmeling and beat him badly. You see how Joe beat him in their second fight when he was more experienced? That is how bad these guys would of beat him but worse.

Guys like you always crack me up, you pick and choose to prove your point. You aren't going to mention Jack Taylor a 180 pound fighter beating Max, or Larry Gains blowing Max away in 2. 185 pound Gipsy Daniels destroyed him 1. 160 pound Max Diekmann beat him. Max had draws with people like Jimmy Lyggett Sr, Leon Randol. Max Baer and Steve Hamas beat him. All be Joe Louis beat him. With the exception of Bear all of these other guys were either cruiser weights by modern standards or even smaller. Some of these guys were the 150 pound mark.

I am pretty sure that Revolver is dead.

Sort of like how you assume that Jack the Ripper must have died after the murders stopped!

He might just be a good candidate to play spoiler on that one.

Schmeling would have found Holmes's style very much to his liking!

 

I don't see it. Schmeling didn't have the head movement to evade that Jab. He would have not been able to get around it. Louis's jab was nothing like Larry's. Louis was much more economical while Holmes threw it constantly and tried to jam it down your throat. Schmeling was good but not good enough to take Holmes

 

Schmeling specialized in countering off the jab, so he clearly has options when preparing to fight Holmes!

 

I realize that's his specialty but you have to admitt he never came close to dealing with a jab like Holmes. Holmes Jab would have him on that back foot for far more than he would want to be trying to mount his own counter attack. That's not even taking into account Holmes own rt hand coming down the pike. Not a good match up for Max

 

I would say that it is a better stylistic match for Max, than it is a qualitative match.

While Holmes is trying to control Schmeling with his jab, and getting countered, Schmeling's left is going to be working his mid section.

This one might get interesting!
