you can't be serious, at least i hope not. what did duran, leonard or hearns do at middleweight before they fought hagler (among numerous other examples of marquee names moving up). and ramirez is a relative nobody compared to hagler.

 

Exactly, none of those guys had earned a shot at Hagler either; they all should've gotten in line behind the MW contenders of the day and gotten themselves ranked first.

 

well yeah, in a world run by boxing purists instead of money. i can tell you baboons aren't often fair about overthrowing their alpha males either. nobility isn't in the nature of beasts when they really want something.

I'm half-kidding, obviously, I know how things work in reality - but on paper I do feel that "celebrity treatment" shouldn't really be a thing.

It depends on context, obviously. A champion going up to challenge the champ in the next division up is one thing (and has loads of historical precedent in the sport as being not just acceptable but very commonplace), but if somebody happens to not be holding any hardware at the moment and just appears in a new weight class saying "ta-da! Hand me a title shot, please. " - I don't care if they are the biggest PPV draw in history, I'm dead-set against that. I also don't believe in 12-rounders where nothing is on the line (ie Hopkins vs. Pavlik or RJJ II, Cotto vs. Delvin Rodriguez, Mayweather vs. Mosley or JMM, Pacquiao vs. DLH). If neither of you has any hardware and you're not having an eliminator box-off with a higher ranking at stake, you shouldn't be scheduled to box above 10 rounds, period. I don't care about star power; institutions either have inherent meaning and value or they don't. You can't just have them selectively mean something and then arbitrarily chuck that out the window because some coddled millionaire athlete considers a 10-rounder beneath him.

 

i agree with all of that. it's just that viewing a sport where corruption and incompetence run rampant wherever you look at it, i'll take a good fight however they can manage to bring it to me. i've sold out my principles, sorry.

 

Wonder if they would start squirming if GGGs team accepted on the spot.

Asking GGG to fight at 168 lbs at the last minute, belt or no belt, is lunacy.

The only fight I could see GGG doing at 168 is against a unified champion who brings money. That's not Ramirez. That's not Benavidez. That's not Truax/Degale. Groves ? MAYBE, but that's not gonna be anytime soon.

 

Can Ramirez make 160?

GGG has some mandatories to take care of. Derevyanchenko has earned his title fight.

 

Now that the fight is off, I want to see GGG vs BJS or Derevyanchenko.
