I don't understand people inability to be intellectually honest about the subject to begin with, these guys are hardly "just" eating their greens and doing their cardio to stay lean. Lets get ****ing real. It's done systematically, done to the most extreme level for every possible ounce of physical advantage possible.

It in itself is a dictating factor of fights beyond the traditional ones of skill & conditioning. I don't understand some fight fans not understanding that men of different sizes fighting one another within the same weight class is actually diluting the competitiveness and fairness of boxing, taking away from individual matches and as a whole, the sport itself.

Not everyone is doing 20lbs tho are they.
Who ever said it’s eating healthy that cuts that much weight.. it’s water weight they cut

Everyone’s body is different, they don’t just go in a room by themselves and cut whatever weight in 1 go. They’ll have their team there who have experience of boxers doing that and know when they should stop cutting

That’s part of reason why some miss weight. They feel it would be unhealthy to cut that last bit..

Sounds like what they tell to most of the lower tier, hard knock lower weight Eastern talent in the world, like the Thai fighters are treated. Massive weight cutting has supposedly been a pretty ingrained part of fight culture there for decades now, to be fair. The biggest name out of Thailand in recent years, again at a lower weight, is again a huge weight cutter. All the way back to Sot Chitalada & even before, so many of these guys are killing themselves to make weight.

I can think of few Mexican fighters who were exceptional weight cutters as well. Raul Perez was a noted lower weight giant of his day that seemingly paid for his early career giant size advantages with a later career fragility.... Carlos Zarate was a huge bantamweight drubbing typically smaller opponents like the poor, diminutive looking in comparison Zamora... Gah. I don't know. The entire thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth most of the time, this last weekend just another in a long list.

That's a beautiful classic fight. You mentioning it makes me want to rewatch it, after all it was only a couple of rounds, kind of like the Hagler/Hearns of bantamweight.

I remember the Chavez Jr debacle after he pissed hot where fans were forced to confront his blatant size advantages as indeed being rooted in straight up cheating, and in the end the two being almost interchangeable regardless.

It's been several years but strangely enough, I recall fans actually caring about it as being an issue then and that wasn't very long ago at all in the scheme of things. Boxing fans are an awful fickle bunch.

Listen to Merchant suck Gatti's ****. Joey Gamache was coming off of bum fights with guys that had records of 63-35-0, 30-32-3, 13-36-0. This was pure **** riding by Lampley and Larry shamefully building up Gamache as a "worthy opponent" for Gatti.

Larry and Lampley pissed themselves watching Mayweather beat the life force out of Gatti who was coming off of a 5 fight win streak from his Ward trilogy and he had just beat Leija by 5th round KO. They were disturbed by this but cheered Gatti thrashing Joey,hypocrites.

I get what you're saying but guaranteed KOs sell tickets man. At the same time it's not just a case of a KO or 12 round UD; a fighter can have a great 12 round fight where they take risks and engage the crowd which is absolutely fine and much better in my eyes. But fighters who stink the joint out and don't take risks to "secure the W" personally are not worth the money as tbh we are paying for an entertaining Saturday night of boxing.

Michael Spinks vs. Eddie Mustafa Muhammad II, which never happened, probably was how that started. Eddie didn't even try to lose the necessary weight, causing the fight to get cancelled, and with a lot of people losing money, the weigh-ins started getting moved to a day before. Yeah, that, and Mancini-Kim happened the year before that. That was on national TV when Kim died, it was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, it wasn’t some obscure fight. I think it became harder for boxing to get sponsors after that. Kim cutting too much weight was believed to have been a factor in the tragedy, and then they lost all the money when Spinks-Muhammad 2 fell apart. So they changed the rules.

I’ve seen an interview and Mancini doesn’t know if the rule change was a good idea, as the studies apparently haven’t shown it to be safer.

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, 2 1/2 pounds over the light-heavyweight limit of 175 at the official weigh-in this morning, played the heavy in a figurative sense as well today. When he failed to attempt to lose the weight in the two hours allowed, his challenge of Michael Spinks for the title was first reduced to a 10-round nontitle event and then canceled by Spinks four hours before it was to be held.

To cap the day, a skirmish involving two former world champions, a promoter and his father disrupted an evening news conference held to explain the cancellation. The L'Enfant Plaza Hotel, the fight headquarters where both contestants are staying, had local police officers guarding elevators in the lobby.

Mustafa Muhammad refused today to undergo the weight loss. After hurried contract discussions, the scheduled 15-round championship fight became a 10-round nontitle event, with purses reduced as well.

Mustafa Muhammad claims he lost his World Boxing Association title to Spinks two years ago because of manipulated scales. He spent time in a steam room before that fight and he claims he was like ''a prune'' when he fought.

For his refusal to at least try to lose the weight, the 31-yearold Mustafa Muhammad will be indefinitely suspended by the Washington, D.C., Boxing and Wrestling Commission, its chairman, Cora Wilds, said at the news conference tonight

''We hope other commissions will honor our suspension,'' she said, adding that the punitive measure would be taken not because the fighter was overweight, ''but for his lack of effort in trying to make the weight.''

Immediately, representatives from state commissions in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Rhode Island indicated their states would also put Mustafa Muhammad on suspension. Other commissions normally honor fighter suspensions, especially for disciplinary reasons.

Representatives from the W.B.A. and the World Boxing Council, which not only recognize Spinks as champion, but had rated Mustafa Muhammad as the No.1 challenger, said the challenger would be removed from the light-heavyweight rankings completely as a ''punitive'' measure.

Emotions were high after Spinks, the undefeated and undisputed champion, changed his mind about meeting Mustafa Muhammad in a 10-round nontitle bout. Spinks won the W.B.C. version last March 18 from Dwight Braxton, also known as Dwight Muhammad Qawi, who was scheduled to appear on the now-canceled undercard here at the D.C. Armory.

''Why should I sacrifice my dignity for this man?'' said Spinks, who at first agreed to meet Mustafa Muhammad in the 10-rounder against the advice of Eddie Futch, his trainer.

At the news conference, the challenger, angered because he said he had learned of the cancellation on the local 6 P.M. television news, grabbed Butch Lewis, Spinks's regular promoter. The two men were sitting next to each other at the dais.

Lewis had jumped up when he saw his father, John L. Lewis, in a melee at the entrance of a small ballroom at the hotel. ''Don't worry, my guys are handling it,'' said Mustafa Muhammad, referring to members of a group called the ''Assassins From Brooklyn,'' who were also trying to gain entrance to the room.

Mustafa Muhammad grabbed the 165-pound Lewis by the jacket. Braxton, also at the dais, leaped to intercede and pushed Mustafa Muhammad away. The two former champions were separated quickly, but a fracas broke out in both ends of the room. No one was arrested and apparently no one was hurt and Mustafa Muhammad left.

That was the most troublesome, because Gatti didn’t even make weight. The NYSAC acted disgracefully. Not incompetence, but just corruption/greed. And it’s tough for Gamache to turn it down because Gatti didn’t make weight. It’s not like he was in a position like Spinks where he can refuse to fight and his career would not suffer.

Gamache still suffers health complications from that fight.
