Just turned 26 at the time, on an insane schedule of fighting 12-round world title fights every 7-12 weeks or so for 4-5 years, Eubank lands more sharp punches in combination early doors against the very, very good Thornton than Toney or Jones (both lb4lb No.1 in US boxing media at time). Those first 4-5 rounds are very impressive from Eubank against the notoriously difficult peek-a-boo defense of Thornton.

It's a shame Eubank's whole strategy in his title run was to bag six rounds on points and then just move away and pose, basically. He would've been happy to draw every fight! He had the ability to finish all his opponents but seemed to fight within himself a lot, potshotting etc in most fights.

The viewing figures for Eubank Sr fights were in the region of 15-16million in the UK alone, every time. We will never seen it again. The ultimate showman and most oddball charactor in the game right there.

As for Thornton, I thought he was robbed against Steve Collins and did very well against a peak Toney. The stoppage against Jones when he came out of retirement was a joke. His performance against Sosa was technically perfect! Good, good fighter Thornton with a dangerous sneak right hand and tidy offensive footwork.

That was ice cold when Eubank said Boxing is his only job and he's going to keep Thornton working at the post office damn :coleman:

Sr had a pair of world class opponents too..
That Spike version 1.0 guy Collins and that ATG level Enzo Calslappy.

Sad that his only 2 decent opponents beat him like a redheaded step child

    Spike O'sullivan?

The guy who found the competition on the 'island' too tough so he went to the US?

The guy lost to CEJ ffs....SR would kill him.

Srs resume reads like a bunch of Heilands with the occasional Frankie Gavin level fighter.

Jr would DESTROY Sr who came into his prime during the weakest era in mw history and STILL SWERVED THE ONLY A LISTERS.
Finally getting forced to take the Enzo fight after losing both fights with Collins who Lemiuex would ice in a rd

All the best fighters in the world were at middle/super-middle in that era (Whitaker aside) - McCallum, McClellan, Toney, Jones Jr, J.Jackson, R.Johnson, Nunn, Benn et al.
