While the WBC has recently been in focus because of doping double standards, the corruption of WBA has somewhat gone under the radar. Most recently, the WBA has, illegally, decided to retroactively damage the career of Alberto Machado. We all know to some extend that WBA has been doing shady business with their "Super" and "Regular" belts for quite a while now, and we have surely read president Mendoza's public promise that he will work on eliminating the belts until we get one WBA champion per division. Well, that surely is not happening as long as he is involved in the corruption circle together with Alan Haymon's organization. WBA has just, under the radar, without letting anyone know about it, put WBA "Super" belt on the line for Gervonta Davis vs. Jesus Cuellar. At the same time, WBA is illegally, retroactively making the current and legitimate WBA champion Alberto Machado (a guy who defeated previous "Super" champion Jazreel Corrales) a mere "Regular" champion, which basically means that he is not a real champ anymore. You are able to check this on Boxrec. Gilberto Mendoza and the WBA are illegally taking this action, and nowhere in the WBA's own rules is written that anything like this could possibly be done. I am not even sure if Alberto Machado himself knows about this. Here is the timeline on the events: WBA "Super" 130lb champion Jazreel Corrales is scheduled to face Alberto Machado on October 21 2017. Oct 20 2017 - Corrales is over the limit at the scales, gets stripped. WBA "Super" title on the line only for Machado Oct 21 2017 - Machado defeats Corrales by KO and becomes WBA "Super" champion. Holds that same "super" belt in his hands post fight. April 19 2018 - Gervonta Davis and Jesus Cuellar are seen holding WBA "Super" belt as they pose on Broner-Vargas final press conference. * Boxrec suddenly shows that Machado had won WBA 130lb title by beating Corralles, without saying whether it is "super" or "regular" belt. * Wikipedia is also changed, showing that Machado won WBA title (no Super/Regular distinction is made). Now, just a factual note, there is difference in physical appearance of WBA "Super" and "Regular" belt, with the "Super" belt looking flashier and more shiny than the "Regular" one. You can see on YouTube that Machado is awarded the "Super" belt after beating Corrales (which is perfectly logical, since Corrales himself was the "Super" champion). Now, whoever wins the Davis-Cuellar fight will illegally become WBA "Super" champion, and Machado will by default be relegated to "Regular" champion status, despite beating the previous Super champion legitimately in the ring. This is without even mentioning the fact that Davis-Cuellar should not have any kind of belt on the line, not even interm. Gervonta Davis has been stripped of IBF title in his last fight for missing the weight, and Cuellar's last fight was at 126 lbs, where he lost to Mares. This illegal and illegitimate action performed by Mendoza in association with Davis' management should not be allowed to happen.
Similar situation happened on October 2015, where Mendoza/WBA illegitimately declared that Broner vs. Allakhverdiev was for the WBA "Super" 140 lb title, despite both fighters coming off losses. Broner had just been defeated by Shawn Porter and Khabib had just lost to Jessie Vargas. WBA skipped/ignored their own rankings and Broner was illegitimately declared WBA "Super" champion after beating Allakhverdiev.
The WBC= We be corrupt and the WBA are full of crooks. Its funny now that the WBO and IBF are somewhat the only legitamite belts. Look at Adonis Stevenson situation.
Haymon wants Mendoza to make Stevenson vs Jack an unification fight. For the WBC and WBA "super" LHW titles kinda like Wlad vs AJ even though Jack fought only once at LHW against the corps of Cleverly and never was a real champ at weight. He vacated real quick that fake belt.
doesn't surprise me wba and wbc are the wworse... IBF and wbo have faults.. but there the only legit 2 organizations in my opinion...
Boxing is the greatest sport in the world, and at the same time, it is one of the dirtiest businesses in the world.
Considering the environment, things like this are part of the reason why organizations like WBA and WBC are based in Panama and Mexico, respectively. I am sure that it's very difficult for anyone here to imagine that highly corrupt situations like this would have been able to frequently happen if those organizations were based in Monaco or Switzerland for example. The fact that the mentioned organizations are run as cartel-like family businesses demands base of operations to be located as far away from the rule of law as possible. Just as Sulaiman had given himself right to jump to Canelo's defense before any investigation had been competed, Mendoza is now performing borderline criminal activities in cooperation with Haymon, and it's not the first time. Mr Mendoza is lucky that the WBA doesn't operate as a typical international organization in accordance with international law (ala FIFA, ITF etc), otherwise he would be dragged out of Panama, put on trial and convinced for his crimes.
That's a possibility. Machado's career is taking a considerable hit here. Gervonta Davis' Wikipedia page is still showing that him and Cuellar are fighting for WBA "Regular" title. Ring Magazine is still showing Machado as the WBA titleholder (and we know that Ring recognizes only 1 champion per organization). Everything here is set up for Davis to win another "legit" belt (as opposed to WBA "regular" which is considered "paper" belt) at the expense of the legitimate champion. This is a travesty.
Just as predicted. They have now edited Davis' wikipedia page and wrote that he won WBA "Super" belt, which Machado's page is now suddenly showing WBA "Regular". So according to the WBA, Machado had defeated WBA "Super" champion, only to become a "Regular" champion, while the "Super" title has given to another guy (Davis) who was previously not even rated by the organization.
Machado was seen holding the WBA "Super" belt in the post fight interview after knocking out Corrales. What he has delivered a few weeks later by the WBA, was the "Regular" belt.
