http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=16067&more=1 History is in the making as the boxing scene is buzzing about the recent retirement of Floyd Mayweather and its effect on the Oscar De La Hoya. As De La Hoya eagerly searches for a worthy opponent, he will find one in former Middleweight champion, Ronald “Winky” Wright, of whom he’s been avoiding for years. Upon hearing the news, Wright exclaims, “It’s destiny… Floyd retired, nobody cares to fight Oscar, but here I am. He can’t run from me any more.” De La Hoya has yet to concede to Wright’s call; however, Wright plans to aggressively pursue De La Hoya. “I’m not giving up…” Wright says, “If he thinks I’m going to fall back and let it go – he’s wrong. He must have forgotten who I am. I’m the guy who’s fought around the world to prove I’m the best pound for pound fighter. And after I pound Oscar, the world will see what I’ve been telling them my whole career: that I am the greatest.” While Wright’s comments may raise eyebrows due to his hiatus from the ring due to his recovery period and alleged outstanding financial requests, he assures that this fight can be a reality. He states, “See, you can’t get caught up in the hype. I can and will do everything in my power to make this fight happen. I’ve been dying to get at Oscar for years, but he’s just been too scared. He, along with the rest of the world, may think the fight won’t happen because I’ve been out of the ring or want too much money, but that’s not true.” Wright continues to clear up the confusion and speculation, adding why Oscar needs to step up to the plate. “What the media won’t tell you is that I’ve always had to get the short end of the stick in order to make fights happen.” He says. “I took a pay cut, so these fights could happen. So now that I’m asking for what I’m worth I supposedly want ‘too much money’? Everyone knows a Wright – De La Hoya fight is a big ticket, so give me my justice. I’ve worked for it and I deserve it. He knows what this fight can do for him too. He knows he can really get paid, so why keep running? It’s about time that the best get back to fighting the best in boxing. No more warm up fights. Just get in the ring with me and go for twelve rounds. Just do it.” No official discussions have been made, but Wright’s camp is ready, willing and able. Damian Ramirez, Wright’s advisor agrees with Wright. He says, “It’s about time. This needs to happen. Not just for Winky, but for boxing. Everyone’s hungry for a fight like this.”
The thing that bothers me about Winky calling out Oscar is that it does'nt really mean much as far as rankings is concerned, so in reality Winky just wants a big payday which I dont blame him but at least be honest about it like Floyd Jr. was.
very strange. winky of course was avoided by some champs. but no one really was there long enough to go for a unification bout. only mosley had the chance and that was that. was this made by a non boxing fan? becuase it looks like a very badly made article. not complete at all. i mean most fight fans no the big ****ing difference between light Middlewieght and Middlewieght
well he got a pretty poor slice of pie when he fought hopkins. in the 90's he had been taken for rides and i think only now has he relised that he has a name that he can get money off.....but damn is he doing a bras job of it. being inactive is never the way to sell tickets. also being silent on all subject...i mean has anyoen seen a winky interview or comments by winky since his last fight whats the catchwieght we are thinking of here? 158 or the legit limit of 154/3?
I think it goes deeper than it being about a payday.. Wright had trouble getting any name fighters.. Oscar has always prided himself in fighting the best, but he did fail to take on Winky.. Seems Winky's star rose, and he became a dominant fighter as Oscar started to shy away from boxing.. Its a good fight that should have happened a while ago, it would still be a good fight now. Old would be rivalry that will generate interest.
Wright doesn't desereve ****. Where he has been for the whole year? + He lost the previous fight + No one wants this fight to happen except WInky
well this is the point only now has he noticed that he can get good fights and good paydays...win or lose fighting hopkins was goign to be an advantage. fightign elite fighters means you are now fighting with the best so others elite fighters would fight him. but he is a terrible promoter. did anyone think winky wanted to fight again...for all i knew he had retired. he should of been all up on the news being vocal. winky promotions would flop if it ever came to power
And Oscar has lost 3 of his last 6, and also only fights once a year. Wiinky would kill him.....Winky has a much better record also.
This is the only fight that makes sense for Oscar right now legacy-wise. I think Winky needs this fight for money maybe and to get his name back out there, also he would be able to say he beat all the best of his generation Hoya, Mosley, Tito...and Vargas, and fought tought with B-Hop 16lbs above his best weight. I personally think Wink should go after Abraham, Pavlik or Mora but he seems to be not interested in anything but paydays now.
Actually, this fight makes sense: two old boxers who should have faced years ago and can now finally get in the ring, now that they're both irrelevant to the overall picture. Winky may not bring much money to the table for Oscar, but he does bring as good a "legacy" win as DLH can expect to secure at this stage in his career. This should be for the "Legends of Boxing" middleweight title. I favour Winky to win, being as I am one of the 15 Winky Wright fans on the planet.
And yet Winky is still trying to convince the fans that this fight would mean anything. It's a pathetic attempt at a payday and anyone who knows even a little abotu boxing knows it.
