i commented on another thread, loma is gonna blow up. those million people who watched, and heard how the talking heads were describing him, are going to tell their friends who dont watch boxing, about this amazing boxer who fights like nobody else and is breaking all kinds of records. everybody wants to be the first of their group to know about the next great thing, whatever the thing may be.
i have said many times pay tv is killing boxing nigel benn/bruno/eubank/ etc etc used to get 17 million viewers on tv when the uk population was 55 million klitchko got 10 million in germany alone v anyone population 80 million now 1.7 million in usa with population 300 million plus is very good its sad for the sport we follow. to put it in context a few hours before last saturday fury v sexton a domestic uk fight got 3 million viewers. would have got 10 million a few years ago but out of sight is out of mind for boxing.
For such a big fight Lomachenko and Linares did not make as much money as they should have. I guess Uncle Bob made more than both together!
The U.S. has a lot of mainstream sports. American Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, even Nascar gets more viewers.
ESPN is not part of basic cable but then again it is more expensive to add HBO and/or Showtime to your cable subscription because it requires you upgrade the basic package all together to add either HBO and/or Showtime. That is why HBO and Showtime doesn't pull a lot of viewers like boxing matches should.
but do boxing and those sports clash ? as far as i know none of those sports take place on saturday nights basketball might ? IMO boxing is a mainstream sport always was / individual sport where american boxers were superstars . i am guessing that usa football /basketball /baseball /hockey /nascar are on NBC/CBS/ABC ? as far as i know they are the 3 american channels that anyone with a tv and aerial can get ? just like in the uk where we have about 100 free channels and 500 pay channels promoters in the uk are just as bad taking boxing off free tv and putting it on pay tv then when a big fight comes you have to pay yet again for that. do that to any sport no matter how popular it once was and the viewing audience will dwindle. does race play a part in the dwindling american audience ?
1.75 mill is a good number for sure, though not outstanding. ESPN ratings in general are higher than those on Showtime and HBO. Wilder/Ortiz did over 1 million and was huge for Showtime when last year no card on showtime did over a million viewers. But ESPN averaged 1.5 mill viewers for it's boxing cards in 2017 and Pacquiao/Horn did 3.9 mill viewers on ESPN so while 1.75 mill is good and suggests Lomachenko is growing in popularity he's still a long way off from being a crossover star like Pac. But Loma has time, hopefully he keeps growing in popularity and becomes a big mainstream star.
Definitely seems like lomachenko a starting to become a bit of a draw like, would love to see him sign with Eddie Hearn and get the uk exposure to become a bigger draw and start earning even more money. I would like to see if his views keep rising or if they start to stall and stay around the 1.5 mil point
Well, you kinda can. Lomachenko is getting twice the audience than what he got on HBO. Yes, HBO has less subscribers but it doesn't mean that ESPN automatically gets bigger ratings. (Loma-Marriaga was 700-800k) Still better to get almost 2mil than almost 1mil.
